another initiation story?
Wow, you guys sure took nicely to Cameron after giving him so much guff. I didn't offer up a funny fish story the other day. Feel like one? I love that dancing banana

Heck yeah son!!! Serve it up . If your friendly, and like the salt, you've found a home here. BS is ok, but it is awful transparent to those of us who have a handle on the real picture.
We help educate AND entertain one another, if you've got something to bring to the table, your welcome here.
Hope it's palatable!!

Re: another initiation story?
I'm not waiting. Heres the story. I haven't been fishing for a long time now. I just started fishing seriously last summer for steely's, I picked up the interest from my dad. I wouldn't even have thought to have started fishing if I hadn't torn a ligament in two fingers, but thats another story. Anyways, so I fish for steelhead most of the time. This last winter I started scouting out spots to fish the Alsea and started fishing it three or four mornings and week doing well enough to get my confidence up. A good friend of mine fishes for trout but didn't know anything about fishing for steelhead, so I started teaching him how to drift fish.
The third or fourth day that we went fishing we were working this slot that is popular with fly fisherman on the north fork and my friend watches his line start to move upstream ever so slightly and gives a set. It was his first steelhead, a silver little hatchery hen. We had no net and the water was deep enough to need waders, and no bank available to beach it, so I told him I would grab its tail. When he got it in I picked it up and it started emptying its eggs out all over my waders. I tried to stop it from wasting all the eggs by putting my finger over the chute and the fish went absolutely nuts, and for good reason. I didn't have my fingers through the gills yet, so it was hard to hold on to it. It gave a good swift squirm and I dropped it, the hook still set all the way through its lip. The fish must have realized that this was its last chance or something because it started rolling like no tommorrow and pull the hook out. I stood there and watched it disappear into the hole it was caught in and turned and looked at my friend. I can't repeat what he said, use your imagination, but he wasn't too pleased, and made sure I knew that I would never live that down.
So, theres my embarrassing story about losing my best friends first holy steelhead.

First of all, welcome aboard and thanks for the story!
Secondly, no guff here, just making sure everyone is who they say they are on this board. This board is comprised of people of all ages and all experience levels. All who join with the intent to learn and participate are welcome. Those who falsify their identity or misrepresent themselves have no place here.

Re: another initiation story?
Cool story and ditto what Rod said. This is a discussion board and BS has it's place but all of us who ply the big blue have way too much at risk to tolerate it when it comes to fishing or boating on the Ocean. If any of you detect a little confrontational response to new guys it's because a few individuals have been pegging the BS meter.
Welcome to the board.
BTW the first steelie I got that was missing the magic fin had to be herded and then scooped onto the bank by my buddy in waders. It was so much fun that I have never carried a net for river steelhead since.
Come meet the gang at the meeting next Wednesday .. we drink beer and everything.

Re: another initiation story?
Where are the meetings? I am going to school in corvallis, so if the meetings are in Portland as I suspect, it wouldn't work unless its on a weekend. As far as drinking beer goes, I have another 40 days until I turn twenty one. I'm shooting to become a brew master at full sail in portland when I get out of school.
As far as the B.S. goes, I'm with ya and understand completely. Stories are just that. Get back to me on the meetings, just pm me or something.

Re: another initiation story?
Welcome aboard! Great story! As you can tell, most of us on this board spend most of our time fishing the salt. I can see by your post that you are hooked on fishing. Keep an eye out on this board for open seats on ocean trips. The big blue offers an incredible fishery. Get up at 3am, set your crab traps, run out and chase Tuna, stop on your way back and catch your salmon, stop for a couple of Lings, pull your traps comein and process your harvest, crawl in bed at 11pm, and get up and do it again the next day.

Are you getting the fermentation science degree? I always wanted to do that.

Re: another initiation story?
Hi Woody, yes I do. I was going to ask if he knew about that. He was quite the brewer.
Pilar, there is more of that for you where that came from!

Re: another initiation story?
Welcome to the board. I'm not much of a salty dog or even a pup, only been on the big blue lake once but I really enjoy reading all the tales these guys post about chasing tuna, giant squid and such. The guys on here really look out for one another and are more than willing to help people out.
I loved that story about your buddies first steelie, sounded a lot like one if my best friends first. We used to do most of steelheading at night during the summer wading from shore. My buddy had his first steelhead on and I had the net. When it got close I turned my head lamp on to get a look at him and he charged right at me so I went for the scoop. This little bullet hit the net straight on and tried going right through it and between my legs. I lost my balance and fell backwards letting the fish flop right out of the net. He was laughing at me so hard though that he didn't care about the fish.

Re: another initiation story?
Yeah, basically, but its not called that. The way it works is I complete a list of undergrad requirements for a food science and tech. major and then complete another list of classes that fall under the title of "fermentation option" and the result is basically a degree aimed at all fermentation areas, focusing on wine and beer. I don't like wine hardly at all, but am deeply in love with beer, so that's what I am going to do.
Just keep on dancin buddy, keep up the good work

Re: another initiation story?
I'm sure this minor "loves beer" in an academic sort of way, based on science experiments he has dutifully performed using hops, yeast and malt. Keep up the studies and welcome to IFish.
