You might want to check the in-line fuse if it has one. I understand everything is hooked up but it sounds like the fishfinder starts to power on, then dies. Normally (this has happened to me several times) there is a high resistance connection somewhere in the circuit. 9 times out of 10 I have found that it is the in-line fuse holder, salt water gets in and corrodes the connectors. Try to bypass it (just for testing purposes) or replace it, if this does not work then check all connections and if they are corroded then clean or replace, another good source of trouble is if there is a butt-splice in the circuit, they will also let the water in and corrode the wire.
