Re: Navy A6 Accident...cool story
Wow, I worked the flight deck on three cruises, made the hair on my arms stand up. I remember some bad things happen to good people. This guy was Lucky. Some one was looking out for him!

Re: Navy A6 Accident...cool story
luckybill, I think guy is a bit luckier than you..or unlucky depending on where you start the timer...
How do the eject seats work in the A6 do you recall. My brother thought the seat is getting blown out of the canopy is suppose to break the shell, and then the second charge is suppose to release the pilot/BN from the seat after you are away from the plane. Unlike fighters where the canopy blows off. It sounds like the separation Pilot from seat happened sending the guys head into the canopy without the luxory of the seat paving the way.

Re: Navy A6 Accident...cool story
Is this the story of the guy that got sucked into the engine of an A6? I was on that ship at the time that happened. I was working on the flight deck that night. It was the Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71. I saw the engine in the hanger bay when they had it all torn apart. Strange thing was, the guy that had the accident was the trainer who was training someone else. Well that is one of the strange things that happened while I was in the Navy.

Re: Navy A6 Accident...cool story
I was a flight deck trouble shooter for three Westpac cruises. Sounds like somebody instaled the ejection seat incorrectly. The seat should never move with neg. or ***. g's applied to the aircraft. The only horizontal movement is with the electric seat motor that adjusts the seat up and down according to your height.

Re: Navy A6 Accident...cool story
Gus, not sure about that part of the aircraft as I worked in Maintenance control. I took care of the Aircraft log books. However the A-6 is a jet, just not a fast one!! But a all weather attack bomber/tanker. I would assume the canopy blows at the same time as the seat rockets take off. Now I have seen some what happens when the seat pins are not put in and you fire one off without being strapped in. Did a West PAC - Med Cruise in 86 - lost two pilots on day two. They had landed and where climbing out when one pulled a bag out and it hooked on the release. They went up w/ the seats but landed on the deck.. both died. Was on the Enterprise. Loved every moment.
