Glad to be in here. I've been lurking for awhile and have wanted to contribute a couple of times so I figure I better get this done.
I'm in the Coast Guard and have been for 22 years. I'm stationed for my final tour in Astoria. My wife and I are going to stay here. I have a 21 foot Trophy and I fish on the river as well as the ocean. I grew up drift fishing the upper Rogue and ocean fishing out of Brookings. I guess a story is customary so here goes;
I was stationed on a ship in Petersburg in the mid 90's. There is an awesome salmon run just outside of town. I had nearly a freezer full of fish so my wife told me not to bring any more fish home, we were running out of places to put it. So I couldn't NOT fish, so I grabbed my fly rod and some flies I had tied and decided I would make it a challenge for myself. At the river, I watched many fish caght on all kinds of lures and egg shrimp setups. I kept at it and finally on a puff ball...a strike...FISH-ON! An hour later with the help of some nice guys nearby I banked a 45# chinook on a fly! I had no camera with me so needless to say, I had to take it home with me.
