Default How often do you check your outboard with jetpump?

I just bought my 50hp Yamaha with Jet Pump last year from a guy and used it alot during the summer and I had the motor winterized this last fall and am now ready to hit the water again. I always grease the bearing after use but how quickly does the sleeve wear down? Infact, what is the sleeve? I had to take the lower unit apart once during the summer because it would start shaking when I reved the motor up. What part of the lower unit is the sleeve? Maybe I just didnt notice it when I took it apart. It seems that the bolt holding the washers and impeller was loose and once I tightened it, it seemed to work fine. How often or how could I tell if the lower unit needs work? I have a stainless steel impeller in there. Any assitance would be appreciated, Thanks!

The sleave is the liner that the impeller sits into. This can become pitted from corrosion or cavitation. There is a very fine clearence between the liner and the impeller when operating. This clearence can be maintained by lowering the impeller. This is done by removing the impeller and removing a washer from the top of the impeller and putting it behind the impeller, thus lowering the impeller into the liner. If the liner is pitted it can be very easily replaced, and not very expensive. Good luck.

Well, if your nut came loose, and there was alot of shaking, chances are your impeller cam in contact with the sleve(liner). The liner is the peice that surronds the impeller. Make sure the liner is smooth, no gouges or large pits. Look at your impellers leading edge, and make sure it is smooth with a tapered edge. The only time, I mess with the pump is when performance is impaired. Most of the time there are small rocks lodged in the grate. I also try and inspect the impeller and liner once a year. If the gap, between liner and impeller is larger than .030 I will shim for a tighter fit(stainless .015).

What bothers me, is the fact that the nut came lose from the shaft. There should be a tin nut retainer, that requires the taps to be bent to lock the nut down so it will not spin. If this problem continues, you need to take the motor in and have a professional insect it. Next time, you might be doing a complete overhaul, and replacing expensive parts. I would keep an eye on this.
