Default Astoria season week #3

Six days and 30 fish, all but two were chinook.

We started out on Monday with a nice catch of five chinook then Tuesday and Wednesday slowed down with two and three fish caught.

Thursday we got six hog chinook.

Friday was thick fog but it didn't matter to the fish, we hooked 14 and put 8 chinook and a coho in the boat. The laddies did well

I finished up the week fishing Saterday with five more hog chinook 18, 21, 24, 28, 31. Since the limit now changed to one chinook and one coho and there's not very many coho showing yet we quit fishing when we got all our chinook. And we didn't even start fishing until 8 a.m.

There's getting to be more upriver bright chinook around and they are big and beautiful! I'm seeing a few more coho hooked but it's still spotty for them, next week we should see more showing up.

SOME OBSERVATIONS-

You can almost time the tide change by the bite. By having contact with several people all up and down the area there has been a bight in just about every spot right at the slack tides. And I don't think I've fished through a slack tide all week without getting at least a fish.

When you're out there be sure to be in a good spot when the tide changes.

Last year people that had never done any good were limiting out on the coho but this year it's a chinook year and they aren't as agressive as 1 million coho. I've been fishing just like I do every year as we target the chinook and if the coho are around we're sure to get them too.

Herring size and leader size doesn't matter. I'm catching plenty of fish on green label herring and 50# leader. And we have never broken off a fish yet. The heavy line also allows for easy release because I can just wrap the line around my hand and then unhook the fish without netting it.

And lastly, just like almost any other fishing I do, I say let them take it. You have to wait, wait, wait until they take the rod down. Then you have to set the hook in the rod holder with out taking it out of the holder first, this allows for no slack in the line. Most the time those two things are the difference between a good day of two or three fish or a great day of six, eight or ten fish.

Good Fishing (and catching),
David Johnson
