Week #1 for my Astoria season
I returned Sunday night from my trip to Mexico with my first trip booked for Tuesday so it was to the phone (and ifish) to see how people had been doing. The report was real slow in the river..........the guides that had been out were only getting 0-2 fish per day. The ones they were getting were real nice, I heard of one over 50 and at least three 40 pounds or better.
That's what I expected, it's always off to a slow start. That's why I don't normally target the opening week.
So with the river slow what's a guy to do but go were the fish are. In this case it was out on the big blue.
You almost couldn't have asked for better weather, no swell and only some wind chop. yesterday was the worst and today, dispite the call for more wind, was the best. It was hard to tell if we were on the ocean or a lake.....
We took limits every day but it was work, we just had the hardest time getting past all the small feeder kings and into some quality keepers.
No one place produced all the time and there wasn't a paturn to how deep we fished.
The first day we got them from 8 to 28 pulls next to #2, yesterday we got them from 15 to 20 pulls by #1 and today we found the fish 11 miles south of the jetty and just about everything was at 25 pulls.
We did a lot of running around to get into some good fish.
