Default questions about a new boat

I have just got my first boat it is a 14 ft aluminum Gregor with a 9.5 horse evinrude. I live just outside of Salem OR. and plan to do some springer fishing on the Willamette. Can someone tell me the best methods and techniques, i have heard quick fish with a herring fillet straped to it is popular but i am unfamilliar with how to do that. Just looking for some advice.

Never cought a springer up in your neck of the woods, but have friends who do. They fish in the Independence area and the popular rigs up there are spinners and spin and glo's with some eggs. You will need a very good anchor as the current is pretty strong, and much of the river is shallow so you'll want to try to find someone to take you who has been out a few times to show you around.

If you do a wrap on that kwikfish, use a sardine instead - they are more oily than a herring and arguably put more scent in the water. You might drive out to Independence to the social security hole in about 3 weeks when the fish start to show and see what those guys are using off the bank. You can have success using the same thing out of your boat. I'm sure you'll get some better advice from some Salem locals. Good luck!
