Default What is this fishing rod worth ???

My neighbor is having an estate sale this weekend and he wanted to know what the value of this old fishing rod was...

Any ideas...

It is a old "Sport King" and in good condition...

KHH

Is there any other description on the rod. I'm going through my antique reference and evaluation guide and I can't fine a rod called a SportKing. Everything in this book is pre 1960. Only lures by SportKing MFG.

Is it fiberglass? i have one that looks identical and is a Mohawk. 5'6" fiberglass wood handle and foregrip. levelwind with 4 guides.

Any other details would be helpful

Hobart is in the book under Hobart and Mary...761 something, I think...that's one I haven't quite memorized yet...he lives in east Portland, but I don't believe he's an ifisher unless he's hiding behind a moniker like krappieciller or something...

Put it on Ebay and it will most likely sell for what it is worth.

I have very similar looking rod that my Step Dad just gave me a few weeks ago. Mine is wood handle and split bamboo rod. There are no markings that I can find on mine and would be really interested to find out how much it is worth also. I sure don't want to put it on ebay. I'm hanging mine on the wall along with my old split bamboo fly rod.

The rods do not have alot of collector value. A bamboo salmon rod sells for $15-25 in decent condition. The fly rods have a higher value. A early glass rod usually goes for $10. They wouldn't bring much more on ebay than they would a garage sale.

I inherited a bunch of bamboo rods several years ago. I had them appraised and the guy said they would “make great wall hangers or tomato stakes but they aren’t worth any $$$”. Apparently a vast majority of bamboo rods aren’t worth anything but it’s like a lottery… somebody has the winning ticket. When in doubt have it appraised. - Spine

Yeah the bamboo rods are'nt worth anything until you see them in an antique shop somewhere. Last one's I saw were $30. I bought an old wright Migill salt water spincaster for $10 and I mean it's an old looking thing with stainless guides. I have it above my fireplace at the cabin.

That Sportking brand was an old Montgomery Ward brand. If it is bamboo it was made in Japan. If it is glass it is most likely Actionglass.

Monkey Wards had a number of makers that would manufacture rods, reels, and lures for them. It may be an old Paw Paw rod.
The Sportking brand was around from the 40s through the early 60s.

Value??? Hard to say. Read this webpage. I talked to the guy and he said without actually handling the rod physically he would have a hard time being able to identify the actual manufacturer. He does have good info on value, and all the aspects of old tackle.
