The accuracy of fishing reports
There are so many times that people will call up a tackle shop for advice or read a fishing report and hear that fishing is hot on so and so river only to go there and get the big old goose egg.
There are a lot of things that play into success or lack of.
For instance while hanging out in a tackle shop I'll here the guy behind the counter say, "there wackin' em up at Eagle Creek." They might be, but just like in all fishing, the "they" is a small minority. Those guys that are killing them are either fishing on private property, are very skilled, are there on the weekdays or all of the above. You can bet they are not standing in one spot either, they are moving and covering a lot of water.
Success all boils down to local knowlege. Being inside the "the loop", being on the water during the week, reading water, skill level ect, ect......
I've put almost 100 steelhead in the boat from the Clackamas this winter yet I bet I've seen no more the 20 or 30 total caught by other boats. At an even worse success rate I've only seen two caught off the bank.
By and far weekends have been the slowest days as there are too many boats getting in the way. It's not that they are catching the fish, it's that they are anchored up right were the fish are laying and then casting to were they are not.
Covering water is another big producer. I may run over 20 miles a day on the water to put my clients lines right were the fish are.
Knowing where the fish will hold at what water condition is the key.
Flexability is another. You have to be flexable and sometimes go to different rivers/places to hit the right water conditions. Knowing were will be best is something worth learning.
So you here they are killing them on the Wilson? So many times it's because we are down there on "The Day" it comes into shape. By the time the news is out it's usually two or three days later. More often than not by the weekend it's low and clear.
I have gotten almost 100 steelhead in my boat this season from the coast too. Just by going to the right places at the right time.
I guess what I am trying to say on this post is don't get discouraged when you go chasing a hot fishing report, just put in your time and learn as much as you can both before you go and while you're out there.
