I pinch off the tail right behind the head. Then I put the tail on with the torn end facing up your line. The key is to insert the hook into the underside about a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch below the torn end that way you can put the egg loop around it easily.
Not to complicated but your shrimp will last alot longer.
Hope this helps.

I generaly use eggs instead of shrimp but back before I caught enough fih to have all the eggs I need I did use shrimp tails.

I also broke them off right behind the head but I threaded them up the hook tail first then just as the little tail flaps got to the eye of my hook I stopped and looped my bait holder loop around it to hold it in place.

if you are fishing for salmon I would use the whole shrimp.
break off the big claw, so it dont pintch the crud out of ya, then slide your hook thru the tail and up the body about half way then pull your hook thru and slide the shrimp up your line far enough to turn the hook and stick the point thru the breast plate of the shrimp and out the top side so the barb is in the out side. if you have eggs out a small glob of eggs in the bait loop it helps to hold the shrimp on the egg and shrimp combo is what most people refer to as a shrimp cocktail.

hope that helps ya out a little

Don't try cured dyed prawns for springers either They'll never work underneath a spin glow

When using Sandshrimp, throw a HALFHITCH AROUND THE END OF THE TAIL TO KEEP IT FROM BALLING UP ON THE HOOK. If your using prawns I'd use the whole critter. I've been using this rig for both trolling and anchoring and caught fish.

I tie two 3/0 Gamis moochinig style spaced about an inch apart. Above that I put on a sliding clevis with a spinner wire cut off at about 2.5" to straighten out the prawns tail. Above that two rainbow corkies and a thin fin or whatever they are. Insert the second upper hook at the bend in the tail of the prawn and let the front hook just hang. Straighten out the prawn and insert the spinner wire to keep it that way.

I think that if you have good prawns, they are way more durable than sandshrimp. You may already know all of this so take it for what it's worth. Also I hit my capslock in the beginning of this post. I wasn't yelling at you, just too lazy to go re-type. Have fun and good luck!
