It doesn't matter. Personally I like to run about 2.5' for jigs, and 3' for drifting.

Most guys up there will probably use 6-10 ft leaders drift fishing, goons.

For Jigs I like between 24''-42'' leader.

Drift fishing I liked 18''-36'' leader. Kinda depends what the water was like. Haven't drift fished in many many years since I picked up fly fishing, but that is what I remember.

I tie most of my leaders about 3.5 to 4' long. They could end up being used for drift fishing, bobbers, or plunking. I will go intentionally long or shorter if I know for a fact that they're going to get used for something specific where length might matter. For instance, if I think I'll be plunking a lot I'll leave some extra on there so that tying in an upper hook doesn't shorten them too much.

I'd guess that I end up shortening 90% of them when I go to tie them on. I fish most frequently with bobber and bait or bobber and jig, and usually run about 3' leaders for that. If someone sees me fishing unusually long or short leaders, odds are that it's by accident due to inconsistency in how much line I pull off the spool when I'm tying.

you shouldn't need anything longer than 4' leader trim down to match the water and run. Only guys I've ever see with anything longer fished the meat hole exclusively and fly guys.
