It's been a productive week in Astoria for me and many other boats.
I fished the 16, 17 and 20th this week with limits every day!
On Monday we started out in the ocean, the fish were scattered but we had our eight fish in four hours. Only had to release one other. We got them at twelve pulls between the CR bouy and bouy 2. After limiting on salmon we headed up river and got a limit of sturgeon too.
Tuesday the ocean was a little lumpy so we just sturgeon fished, another limit for the boat.
Today, was another sturgeon trip. It was of to a slow start, by ten we only had caught three fish, two were keepers though. We hunted around, tried another spot, a few more shakers, then another spot and another shaker and another keeper. We were into another long slow spell and then just before we quit we hit one last spot and bang! We started whacking them. We were even releasing keepers! We quit after using up my last baits.
Our sturgeon fishing has been taking place in the John Day area on shrimp or anchovies fished in six to twleve feet of water. One of the days we did get into them in some forty five foot water with smelt.
One of the keys has been to move around if your not getting into them and also knowing enough spots to try.
