Go with the intention to enjoy the class and you'll have a ball. There is no part of the course that will be too hard if you study the material given.

If you haven't already, go to Captains Nautical Supply and get those cue cards for the rules of the road and the lights and signals. You must know the rules of the road and lights and signals 100%. Make a game of it.

When I took the course and test, I was jacked up and enjoyed every minute of the course and found the test a challenge that I also enjoyed.

You'll do fine.

Geez Mike....flashcards = flashback!

white over green, the skipper is mean.

white over red, the pilot is dead.

Unless you are above the Huey Long bridge, then you better get back to Oregon.

Is that how it went?

I'm really envious. Study hard and enjoy yourself. One thing that always tripped up the test takers that I have known is when, in a navigation question, they have you at dead stop with the anchor up, the vessel is underway with no way.
Good luck .

Hey Hawg Caller.

Just out of curiousity when were the dates for this class. Is this the same class needed by the State to operate off shore with a 6 pack lic?

Wak- I believe the 100 ton is much more intense. I know it requires more hours behind the helm.

Well, it has been a long time since I did what you are about to do. I Did both Clatsop Community and Sea School.

Here is what I think is important. There is much more information out there than you will ever use...so, study only what it takes to pass the test. And study this information over and over until you can do it in your sleep. Then, when you go test at the CG you will walk right through it. If you can team up with a partner and test each other, that worked really well for me.

If you are having trouble getting through it, you might contact Mike Fryer. He teaches all this stuff for a fee(he used to be with Sea School.) He is just the best at teaching this course. Capt. Kujo knows how to get in touch with him.

You will probably need basic charting tools for your chart problems, though I'm sure they will have most things that you need, available. I think they used to allow calculators?

I have been told that the chart problems are done on board a CG vessel for the 6 pack license? I don't know about that, for sure?

Just try to learn it so well, that you pass the first time, because there is a waiting period to retake some of the sections. It's intense, only because there is a lot to learn, not because there is anything hard to learn...just,

Study, study, study...!!

Oh, and for Mark who seems to have forgotten all his training....

Port wine is red.
Green over white, fishing tonight.
White over red, pilot ahead.
And many more, that I can't remember right know!

Oh Jer-ry.... Yea I'll admit that I forgot a few of the "jingles"...I went to a place called Crawford Nautical School in 1981, in San Francisco. This guy Crawford was something else, and what a character. He had those unlimited, any tonnage, any ocean licenses. He probably invented a lot of those rhymes & jingles. It was in the old ferry building, and of course smoking cigarettes was OK, since the instructor smoked while lecturing. There were a lot of these real tough grease monkey tugboat guys there. I kind of kept to myself, except for one other deckhand friend in the class.

Like you & others mentioned....rote memory. The flash cards are a must for the lights & signals.

The regulations use a lot of old seafaring legal language. One favorite memory of a Crawford lecture was when he discussed a particular part of the COLREGS...the part which states that you may not shine a spotlight at another vessel..the regs uses the expression "you may not embarass another vessel" and Crawford says, "now does this mean you may not pull down your pants and moon another vessel? No, it means you may not shine your spotlight at the bridge of another vessel."

Thanks for the number.

I have thought about getting the 6 pack thing for sometime. I inquired once and was directed towards the 80 hr course in Astoria.
I actually started logging trips a few years back and have well over 100 so far. The CG man I talked with said time could be documented other ways also, letters from commercial, and charter friends, boat registrations and the such.

I am not worried about any of those things, the only hang up, was taking 2 vacations to spend in school.
I know others who took the coarse in Newport, and today have their charter lic.

I will give them a call.....Thanks

The six pac license is an abbreviated version of the 100 ton. Better to just get the 100 ton license.

As for the 100 ton, your final tonnage master certificate will be determined by the Coast Guard. If you have 720 hours on a boat that is rated at 39 tons or greater you will get a 100 ton masters license. Any less and you will get a 50 or 25 ton certificate. 50 tons is good for about a 65' boat and 25 for about a 40' boat.

Like Mike said, the Rules of the Road is the toughest part of the test. Bone up hard for it. They have some trick questions on that section and

Good Luck

Robert, I know you meant days, not hours. Maybe it's that hours seem like days for you now? You need to head to Winchester Bay and go fishing!

Hawg Caller, to answer your question (instead of all this bad humor), a couple things you might consider:

Start practicing triangulation. Remember that thing from math class about a^2 + b^2 + c^2? For the right triangle? That 'Pythagorean theorum" thing? It comes in handy for numerous distance calculations (2 sides known, solve for the third). It also gets used on chart problems, where you figure distance between two points. Remember...on a chart, the east & west scales are only identical at the equator.

Most of the math is just basic algebra. The time / distance calculations, the compass error calcs, etc.

If you want to get tricky, bone up on the basic trigonometry functions. Using trig & a calculator gives you a lot of short-cuts on any of the triangulation problems, and some of the charting too.

Have fun....Mark

Uhh uhh... Mark... staying a long ways from WB this summer. In fact I got caller id for the phone. Convenient to be gone all the time or on the internet. Maybe I should spend all my time on ifish. Good thing I can selectively open email.

I heard that both of you have a bad case of two foot-itis. I don't know who is worse. Mark with trying to find the perfect used boat and Rich thinking he can have me for slave labor rebuilding a junker. After helping him repower the Bertram last year, he thinks that doing it again is a piece of cake.

Nah... Oregon Inlet in the Carolina's sounds like the right Oregon for me.

Robert, last time I talked to your nephew the first thing I said was "hey Rich, how would you like to co-author a book with me, called 'Boat buying for dummies' "? I think between the two of us, we have plenty of material!

He told me the survey was somewhat like your Alaska survey. The surveyor kept shaking his head and had this wry smile like he was dealing with an insane person. Kept mumbling about: "Are you sure you want to do this???" I think Rich is buying Johnny Cash's home built Cadillac.

But getting back to Hawg Caller's predicament. He should also be realistic and realize that the REC or the school will let him retest on the sections that he might not pass. But there is a time limit to retesting.

One of Rich's fishing buddies shook his head when Rich decided to get his Master's License. He said that a Captain's License led to the ruin of really good fishermen. Something about being a boss instead of just guys drinking beer and having fun. Look at Pilar. He's not a captain and seems to really enjoy what he is doing. Now if he got a captain's license...
