Default Braided line questions

I recently put 30 lb power pro on my spinning rod. So far, I love it. I've been fishing eggs and have been using a mono leader thus far. My first question is: Will this line work for bait loops? My concern is that it is too small in diameter and it will slice through the bait. Do I need to do anything special to make it work?

My second question is: Mark of First Cast Jigs mentioned in is last newsletter that he uses tuff line main line and a mono leader while jig fishing for fall chinook. Is there any good reason not to tie braided line directly to a jig?

as for the second part of your question,as far as steelhead go they tend to be leader shy sometimes and they could see the tuff line easily.(exception) I know some people that run tuffline stright to their plugs when backtrolling and do just fine.I use mono straight through for jig fishing,8lb.

Good luck!

the short answer: power pro is great until you get to the hook. it doesn't take abrasion well and mono does a better job. plus, mono hides in the water better and there are some flourocarbons and copolymers that do a better job at the terminal end.

now tuff or power pro to a plug is a different story. the fish don't tend to get a plug deep inside their mouth so you don't have to worry about abrasion. the action of a plug will cause a fish to focus on only the plug and not the line it's attached to.

Thanks. Great answers. I think I'll leave the power pro on my bobber and jig rod and run a mono leader to the jig. I guess if that is the Mark does it, I can't really go wrong by doing so.

what

Actually I use both mono and braided right to the jig. It depends on what rod I'm using. On my spinning rod the last couple trips out I ran Power Pro for mainline and also to the jig. Hooksets are immediate since there is little stretch. Make sure your drag is set a little lighter to absorb the shock of the initial hookset.

Since 20# Power Pro has the diameter of 6# test, it has less resistence and works fine running straight to the jig. I've also run Power Pro straight to the jig on my fixed bobber set-up and that too has worked good.

i agree, mark. going with power pro all the way to a jig is fine. in fact, pretty much any lure is okay. it's pretty rare for a fish to get a spinner or a hotshot (for example) hooked deep in the mouth. however, rigging a bait loop with power pro would not be recommended. and yes, the thinner diameter of the line would tend to cut through baits.

I know this topic is old, but I have a couple more questions. When using a mono leader, what is the best way to attach it to the mainline? Using a swivel or knot the 2 lines together (if so what knot). How long of leader should I use?

I like to tie my mono to my PowerPro mainline with a Blood Knot, haven't had any problems yet...(knocking on wood)

I've tried the blood knot and had the braid cut right through the mono. I don't know, maybe I'm tying the knot wrong. But I just use a swivel now. I also have to agree with GetBent on the abrasion thing. Braid may show alot of abrasion but it still remains strong.

I've also heard of that problem Corkie, and can definately understnad it happening as I've seen my powerpro cut through a lot of things, but so far...things have been good, worked well on springers on my bobber rod. I'll probably lose a hoss in a month or so and kick myself though.
Nice fire pics, I've gota book full also. finished my 7th season last summer. structural, and running an engine for USFS, thinking about rappelling next?
