Anchor roller- Motion Marine vs Big Water
I am trying to decide between the Motion Marine anchor roller vs the Big Water. The Motion Marine is around $80, where the Big Water is listing at $160.
I have done some searching and it seems the main selling point with the Big Water is that a person can pull the entire assembly (float, puller, ect) up through the roller.
Is this not possible with the Motion Marine? Is it a worth doubling the price for this feature?
Thanks,
Joe

Re: Anchor roller- Motion Marine vs Big Water
We have the MM unit. It is half the tool that the big water piece is. It does half as good a job. It costs half as much.
Ask yourself this, after you have pulled the anchor, chain and ball over the side for the 15th time today, is it worth 80 bucks to not hurt your lower back?
I bought our boat from a big name boat maker. The salesman there told me pretty much directly to buy the Big Water unit. I did not listen to experience and wisdom. Oops.
Mark and the " Hey, can you grab that anchor and hoist it over the side without scratching the paint? What's that? No, the roller don't really work very well. Just pull it over the side..." dog.

Re: Anchor roller- Motion Marine vs Big Water
I have not had any problems with my MM anchor rest except for it has a tendency of fraying my anchor rope.

My MM roller works fine too. I fish by myself quite a bit in the spring and I have no problems with a 38# anchor.

I looked at both too, but decided on the Big Water. I haven't regretted it... Works great, and it's bomb-proof.

Re: Anchor roller- Motion Marine vs Big Water
What does a big water look like? anyone have a picture? I have a MM without too many complaints other than I have to watch my fingers when putting the anchor back in the cradle. I'll look for them at the boat show.

Re: Anchor roller- Motion Marine vs Big Water
The MM unit is pretty good. But, I have pulled over both units, and getting a ball, chain, and anchor in with the Big water unit is mucho easier. It can be done with the MM roller, but it tends to bounce out at the critical point.

Re: Anchor roller- Motion Marine vs Big Water
I have had both units. The MM unit gets the job done, but the rope/chain will often slip off of the roller and the chain ends up sliding/grinding on the top of the gunnel as you pull it in. After several seasons of this the aluminum starts getting pretty scratched up because of the chain.
The Big Water unit is more expensive, and a little more unsightly in some peoples oppinion.
Personally I love it and wouldn't go back. The real bonus is having the metal pin that holds the anchor in place in the nest. No more worrying about getting in a wreck and having the anchor fly through the back window of your truck.

Re: Anchor roller- Motion Marine vs Big Water
If you get in a wreck that will dislodge your cradled anchor, I suspect that would be one of your lesser problems.
I wrap my chain around a cleat right behind the anchor and also tie down the rope to another cleat.

Re: Anchor roller- Motion Marine vs Big Water
I love Ifish. I learn something everyday. I never even thought about what my anchor would do in an accident. I'll bet it could fly right out of the Motion Marine holder and into the back of someone's head. I couldn't even imagine going through something like that. From now on I am going to make sure my anchor rope is cleated off. Thankyou for the superior information. It never ceases to amaze me how many dangerous things are involved in fishing.
Thanks again, you may have just saved a life. Maybe mine.
