Default Santiam Steelies

Any reports of steelies in the North Santiam? How about a Siletz report while we are at it. River is up in Gates, and the color is way off.

While a few steelhead have entered the North Santiam, these are mostly native fish. Winter fish will continue to enter for months, overlapping the summer run. While a couple of summers will enter in January, the run will be significant in March.

Reports from the Siletz are tough ... those who fish it are not too talkative.

Best to ya,

Here's a couple of quotes from today's ODFW Weekly Fishing Report:

SILETZ RIVER : Winter steelhead angling is fair. are reminded that there is no retention of coho salmon , non-finclipped steelhead, and cutthroat trout .

About 70–80 percent of the fish ascending Willamette Falls are destined for the Santiam River system, and about 2/3 of these are headed into the North Santiam . Winter steelhead are available in the Santiam as early as late February and contribute significantly to the fishery through April. By then, the summer run steelhead , mostly marked hatchery fish, have moved in and become the target catch. Winters are typically fished with a variety of steelhead lures or bobber and jig. The North Santiam River is generally preferred by anglers over the South Santiam because water clarity is better during the winter and spring months, and both bank and boat accesses are better.

SANTIAM RIVER : Some steelhead are in the rivers. Both North and South Santiams are running quite high.

tag-a-long haven't heard about the siletz, it may be a little early, but the N.Fork Alsea is loaded as what the reports that I've been getting have said. If you want a keeper a different river will give you better chances. Look at the counts at the trap and see what is coming your way.http://www.dfw.state.or.us/ODFWhtml/...am_Counts.html
