Default July 15 Gov. Is w/pix

In the "Even a blind chicken gets some corn" theme of fishing, I got this 31 lb. critter on the upriver end of Gov't. Island.

Small Alvin with a chartruese tip.
24 feet of water.
3' lead line
11AM which should have been 1-2 hours after high tide.
Sunny.

Saw one other fish caught at about 10AM. That was also on a chartreuse Alvin.

It was a small Alvin. I had it out due to slow/high tide current and was getting ready to change it to a bigger one as the current had picked up.

I guess the fish were coming through right about high tide and 1 hour down.

Brion-

WOW !!!!! That thing is huge, even without the sneaky arm extension

Good thing you ignored the graphs, and kept on fishing.

I think it was I who told you the run should still be going strong right now  , the next 10 days should be good according to my boat records from last year, we'll see how it pans out.

Again, Sweet fish

FWF1,

Hey...you've got the arm extention down...then you zoom in so just the ends of the fish show...that should give you the...ahem...enhanced image.

One of my buddys from DC was with me so I coached him through taking the pic...but I have a clip on camera "tripod" that hangs down from the top and a remote control to take pix.

He also helped out with the net...sort of.

I'll be out there a couple of mornings this week if a few things fall into place. I like that area, its been good to me this year.

That is one huge fish and should make a bunch of good meals.

Husker,

Timing was perfect...when we got back the UPS guy had put my new Beckman's net on the back porch.

I got the Beckman's because they say it is treated with a "flexible" coating that is "Ideal for Catch and Release".

A lot of native fish in the current run of fish.

6horsekicker,

Keep in mind that it's pretty slow. In the days I've fished, three or four fish for the fleets (20 boats?).

The main spots seem to right off the top (upriver) end of Gov. Island.

Some folks line up right where the rocks on the bank go to sand. It's about 30 feet there.

Then a bit down river from that point, maybe 100 yards, it's about 20-25 feet. That's where I was today.

I've seen blue/silver and chartruese/silver wobblers work in that area.

Up river, just a bit past Camas, there's a bunch of folks fishing the bend in the river. I did good there a week ago using brass blade/red bead spinners in shallow water, 13-15 feet.

Another fleet downriver from Camas, right near the Sandy in the bend there where the sand bar comes way out into the river. Should be a good spot, forcing the fish to come around the point.

All this is easy access from Chinook Landing or Camas launch ramps.

Might be a stupid question but do they really make a small Alvin? I thought they just came in one size.

Nice fish by the way

Brion,

You are further down river than the tip of Gvt. Is. You can see the I205 bridge in your picture. You cannot see the bridge from the E.tip of Gvt Island. I know, That's where I have been fishing. and you're not there.

Lucky duck

Hmmm...on the "small" Alvin. Maybe I'm being generic but it was the smallest "Alvin" I had in the box.

The small on the right is what I was using.

Hmmm...I wonder if the location of the color has an effect?

Hey Brion,

That is the normal size of an Alvin but I sure like the size of that "K" lure. Thanks for the pic. I doubt the color ocatioin makes a difference.

Hope you get another soon

Lucky Duck,

I kinda think the color location would make a difference.

Near the leader, it doesn't move as much while on the hook end it's swinging around, flashing the fish.

I like the X-Stream wobblers and they have the color on the hook end or as a diagonal stripe with the "fat" end near the hook.

Brion,

What size weight were you using there today, and did you notice the current speed on your fishfinder? I fished that area Saturday (with spinners in 15' about a quarter mile upstream from Bartlett's Landing) with no luck. Even on the outgoing tide, the current was only about 1 mph.

Waterfish,

I had on 5 ounces. I had about 80 feet of line out. I think it would have held at about 60 feet of line.

My buddy had 8 oz, he wanted to actually be off the bottom so he let out about 40 feet (in 24 feet of water). He'd let it out slow, hit the bottom and then set it.

My guess is that with 8 ozs he was up maybe 4-5 feet, 3 feet for the leader and then current picking up the weight a foot or two.

I got the fish on mine sitting off the bottom.

On the water speed, yesterday I was there at high slack and the water speed was .02 mph. It was enough to keep my wobbler going. I was getting ready to go to a small spinner of the wobbler quit.

Today, it was later in the outgoing. I think it was about .5 when we got there and was increasing as the tide went out.

Brion

Luck Duck

On fishing the K-lure in the fall, I dont' remember fishing it last year, mostly went with X-treme wobblers vs. the Alvins.

I think I'll use the K's more as the current slows, it was probably working pretty good (small spoon in a fast current) when it got hit so the action may be what attracted the fish.

Hadn't been in out in a year. Fixed the boat on tues, and was out yesterday with the wife. I caught a 32 pound native, and a 2 foot shaker a little downstream from where you were at. Thanks for the heads up. Fish fought me for 10 minutes

My wife even netted it  She couldn't even lift the fish into the boat

They are big fish out there right now.

A guy upstream from us had a 30lb native right before we go out 31 lb keeper.

If you want to get that average up, fish where I do right now- THE OCEAN! No better way to boost your self esteem! It's amazing what salmon do when they are actually in an environment that they actively feed in!

You are in a hard fishery to be consistent in! Good luck!

Brian and Lucky Duck,
I read this on the paper that came with one of my cartruese(? on spelling) and chrome Lure Jensen kwikfish. They claimed they found they get better hookups having the color at the rear where the rear hook is attached as apposed to the color being on the front of the Kwikfish. They think it is because of how the fish hits/attacks the lure. When the color is up front the fish hit the front of the lure where there are no hooks. With the color at the rear in the same area as the hook the fish hits/attacks the rear and gets the hook. I don't have the paper to do an exact quote but that is the basics of it.

It does makes sense.

The Xtremes and the K lures do have the color on the rear while the Alvins are up front...at least the one I grabbed for the pic comparison.
