Re: Very chunky young brown trout (pic)
yes, that's a pretty clear sign of Whirling disease in my opinion too, although I could be mistaken. A small fish like that would really never have a heavy body. I hope it's not from local waters. :depressed:
please let others know so they can look out for it.

Ok, I admit it, did not know what whirling disease was, so I looked it up here: http://www.whirling-disease.org/FAQ.html
Ugly.

Re: Very chunky young brown trout (pic)
I don't think that's whirling disease because it's laying flat in his hand. Whirling causes one sided fibrosis in the muscles, palsying the fish into a curve, thus only able to whirl or swim in circles.
This looks like a birth malformation where the spine is either lacking the proper # of vertebrae or did not elongate properly. A dwarf fish if you will. I doubt you will find other fish like this in the stream it was caught.
In other words, "HUNCHBACK, HUNCHBACK, HUNCHBACK".
Sick.

We caught a rainbow in Marion lake that looked like that 10 some years ago. We named him "lumpy"

Re: Very chunky young brown trout (pic)
I caught 3 fish like that out of a friends pond in the Blues a couple of years ago, excecpt they were about 2lbs and looked like footballs. We ate them and they taseted fine. I do not think it is a disease since we have not caught anymore like that since in the same water, some 100 or so fish later.

Re: Very chunky young brown trout (pic)
Found a salmon smolt(in my container at a fin clip a few years ago) . Maybe he had a sudden stoppage incident with the side of a tank ?.
Needless to say, I didn't bother to clip him, figured he has enough issues already.

Re: Very chunky young brown trout (pic)
I caught a rainbow just like that years ago. I stopped by the Bandon Fish Hatchery and asked the guys there about it. They said it's not "that" uncommon. These fish are basically the equivelent of a human "midget". There's nothing wrong with them, except they stop getting longer and otherwise continue to mature.
When I hooked him (in a regularly planted mountain lake (pond) I swore I had a bluegill on because of the way he fought.
I kept him in my freezer for years as a conversation piece...

Man, I thought of something totally different when I saw the title to this thread. Let's just say I didn't expect to see a picture of a real fish!

Ahh boys, whirling disease does not affect brown trout. Plus the little bugger looks to be in good health!

Re: Very chunky young brown trout (pic)
whirling disease does affect brownies. They are carriers, though only a small percent of browns show signs compared to rainbows.
not saying this is WD, but browns do get it.

This type of thing was very common at Diamond Lake in the early 60s.

Re: Very chunky young brown trout (pic)
So, I'm thinking that if this fish has some genetic anomaly and is able to reproduce when mature, is this a fish that should be excluded from the gene pool? What are the legalities regarding disposing of such a critter or retaining it to submit it to ODFW biologists? If this fish was retained for either of those reasons, how would OSP address it?

Re: Very chunky young brown trout (pic)
ORS, when I talked to the DFW about this, they said there's nothing wrong with the fish, except that it's a 'midget'. It's not contagious, unhealthy, transmittable...nothing. It won't breed more midgets either.
