Default Someone lose a Bluetick hound ??

My son was out hwy 35 between govt camp and hood river somewhere and out in the forest with no camps around this dog is standing in the road. My son said they stopped and the dog jumped in without any coaxing on their part at all he looks skinny and young. Hopefully somebody didn't just dump him If anybody is missing one PM me and I'll put you in touch with my son.

good for your son for picking him up and not leaving him out there.
its hard to tell but he doesn't look to be in to skinny or in bad shape. I know my 7 month old girl looks really skinny but she eats a ton. young hounds always look skinny if you ask me.

I will do some checking on one of hound boards to see if anyone is missing one.

The unfortunate truth is that if he had no collars on he was probably not much of a hunter a dumped by some coward.

I don't see any ribs showing, I always thought that was a good indicator on if the dog was underweight. Never owned a hound though.

Anyways nice looking dog. I guess you taught your son right!

I sent a message to an individual I know at Greenhill Humane Society in Eugene. No guarantees but I'll let you know as soon as she answers.

It's a 'no kill' shelter.

You might want to have your son reach out to them directly as well.

That is not skinny for a hunting hound.

Years ago we picked one up on hwy 140 between Klamath Falls and Medford. It was late sunday evening and this being prior to cell phones we had no way to call the number on the collar until we got home. It turned out the guy was from Klamath and he was ****** that we had picked it up and driven it clear to Medford. He had been out looking for it and told us that even if we had left it, the dog would have eventually made his way back to the drop off point. He made the drive over to pick it up on monday and was thankful for us calling to at least let him know it was safe. We ended up learning quite a bit from the guy and had a good long BS session.

If you have not put a post on Craigs list you should. Be sure to list where it was found but DO NOT post photos. A real owner will be able to give you a real good description. These guys have lots of bucks and even more time into their hounds training. I would hate to see it go to someone other than the true owner.

If a vet does not find a chip, you should also have them look for a brand. Lots of these hounds will be branded. Some do it in obvious places and others in hidden places---lips, inside ears.

You might also ask the state trooper that works that area. He will have a good idea of who is/was running hounds in that unit/units over the weekend. While elk hunting up there a few years back we ran across 2 truck loads of hounds that had come down from Ellensburg to hunt for the weekend. That is a popular place to run hounds. If/when they might have passed a trooper he will probably have a plate number.

Good luck and be sure to keep us posted.

I also put a link to your post on here.

Very good advice here. There is nothing more frustrating than heading for a dog you are tracking to watch it leave the country on your gps screen. This dog having no collars, though, does make me think someone probably thought he was a cut puppy and didn't realize that hounds need exercise. They can often be a handful for someone who doesn't understand the breed. Try posting on the biggamehoundsman board and see if someone knows where he came from. If not, I'm sure someone there would give him a try in the woods.

A few points as it is always a fear to lose my dog.

It is possible for the dog to have slipped his collar.
Please please please get him checked for a chip or tattoo. This should be the very first thing you do.
And lastly take the dog to the shelter nearest to where you picked him up, or in the very least notify that shelter that you have the dog. First place I am gonna look for my lost dog is the local shelter, not ifish and not craigslist. And first thing the shelter will do is check for a chip or tattoo. It is not your dog to keep or give away.

Those dogs run MILES when working. It's not unusual to lose one for a night. They'll usually run the road and be found the next day. Which is where you found it Those dogs are in the thousands of dollars. Someone is LOOKING for it.

Only true for maybe 5% of hounds. More hounds don't make good dogs than ones that do. They are common to loose, but I've never hunted with some one that doesn't run collars. Also just because it chases a house cat doesn't mean the dog can hunt. Given all the information, unfortunately it was probably dumped in the woods by someone that didn't want it.

Had one of those when I was a they need to run. Great dogs but require lots of space. Wouldn't be right to keep him in the city. Guy down the street has a red bone and he gets out 4 times a week and runs the streets.

Like others have said check for chip.
