Re: Salmonella......?
If you think it is salmonella, I don't think it came from salmon and no, he won't get over it on his own. Here is a bit of info...
The incubation period for salmonellosis, i.e. the time between ingestion and the onset of the first symptom, may be from 6 hours to 10 days, but usually falls between 6 hours and 48 hours.1 Salmonella causes a gastroenteritis; persons experience diarrhea, often with fever and abdominal cramps. The onset may be sudden and there may be nausea and vomiting initially. The diarrhea often includes mucous and is occasionally bloody.
Take your son to the doctor. If your son is displaying symptoms of salmonella poisoning, it could be something very serious. Or it could just be the flu.

Re: Salmonella......?
 Your DOG...
SPD symptoms include:
fever
loss of appetite
dehydration
diarrhea
enlarged lymph nodes
vomiting
weakness
It typically takes 5-7 days for symptoms to develop after ingestion of the infected fish. If untreated, 90 percent of the dogs showing symptoms will usually die within 14 days.
If you know or suspect that dog has eaten raw salmon, call your veterinarian immediately. Treated appropriately, dogs usually have an excellent chance of complete recovery.

Re: Salmonella......?
OB...you poor thing. You'll probably have nightmares thinking of his two year old gnawing on the salmon carcass!
Sorry the dog is ill but I'm glad it isn't your son or daughter.

Re: Salmonella......?
Fishfinder,
Definately take him to the Vet ASAP!! If not treated the odds are very good that he will die within 5-10 days. The vet will give you some pills if it is early enough, otherwise they may have to hook him up to an IV for a few days increasing your out of pocket expense. The good news is that once they contract the virus and are treated for it, they will never get it again. Check out this link

Get him to the vet asap. I almost lost my Boxer a few years ago due to Salmon poisoning.

Re: Salmonella......?
Phil - naw, I've had 2 kids actually live past the age of two and I've yet to find anything that would surprise me about those little ankle biters. Besides, chewing on a salmon carcass would only show excellent taste and good breeding.
Fishfinder, do keep us posted on your pup. Hope he pulls through okay! The timing would indicate that maybe it isn't salmon poisoning, but I sure wouldn't ignore the possibility.

Re: Salmonella......?
What everybody else said. If the vet can catch it early it is very simple to cure. On the other hand, if you wait too long, and they start to show symptoms ie; vomiting, it's usually too late.
FYI, Salmonella is caused by a bacteria. It is a major cause of food poisoning. It's what you get when you leave the 'tater salad out too long.

Re: Salmonella......?
When my dog got into some salmon under the 205 bridge at Oregon City, I knew right away what we might be in for. I got him to the vet ASAP, and he LOADED the dog up with tetracycline, 500mg-4 times per day!
Even with this rapid intervention, the dog damn near died, and all I could do was watch and shove pills down his throat. Dog is now 14 years old and in great health!
Hope it's not too late. Act Now my friend!

Re: Salmonella......?
Rusty, was your dog trolling eggs behind a diver? I got into a salmon under the 205 bridge that way. Little 12# chromer.
Glad your dog is ok. I haven't been the same since.

Re: Salmonella......?
Riverkeeper,
Thanks for the message.
My dog got sick many, many years ago. If I hadn't noticed that he was "licking his chops" when he returned from his "walk", I might not have seen the salmon he was eating.
No, I wasn't trolling the dog behind a diver and eggs...but hmmmm, let me think about that for a while. He's getting pretty old now, and who knows!

Re: Salmonella......?
Well, just got back from the vet, Ouch!! I dont know what hurt worse, the poke he got or the bill I got! Anyways she said that yes, the timing was off, but she reccomended that we treat for anything that is viral. So she loaded him up on fluids and perscribed 150mg of doxycyclene and a dose of de-worm just in case. To make the story a little more scary she told me that his temp was lower than it should be! (not good any way you look at it), if it was salmon poisoning his temp would spike for 5 to 8 days, so I asked about Paraquat poisoning,(the poisonings that happened at Laurelhurst park in pdx) and she said that it could be and its a death sentence. :depressed: So now we sit and wait. He could get better for a couple of days w/ this treatment and then crash. So please keep him in all of your prayers, His name is Damon. Thankyou,
Jim

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help ok?

Salmonella......?
My 2 yearold has been acting sick for the last couple of days. About two weeks ago I caught him chewing on a salmon carkass. How long does this take to incubate? and, can he get over it on his own? :depressed:

Re: Salmonella......?
I'm assuming this is your dog
I would get him/her to the vet ASAP. By the time they start acting sick you don't have much time left. I'm not sure what the survival rate is without treatment - all I remember are the dead dogs.

Re: Salmonella......?
Others may have more specific answers, but if you think your dog may have salmon poisoning, get him to a vet, NOW! Salmon poisoning is serious business in dogs. If you wait too long, it may end up being too late. Usually you will see signs of being lethargic and a loss of appetite. The sooner treatment starts, the easier it will be on your dog.

Re: Salmonella......?
First, I'm assuming you're talking about your two year old dog? Next it's not salmonella it's salmon poisoning. If it's not eating well and just not acting right I'd assume it has it and get it to the vet. I haven't heard of many animals getting better on their own. Mine almost died.

Re: Salmonella......?
Sad thing about this disease is that a serum could be made to prevent this. Several vets that I know have stated this would work, however since Salmon Poisoning only occurs in the west, there isn't enough money to be made by the companies that make the serums. If it happened all over the world, then a serum would be available.
Ain't that a bummer. I bet there would be a lot of dog owners that would have been happy to pay $$$ if it would save their pets.

Re: Salmonella......?
If there was serum, we would have gave it to our oldest dog, the father of our 2 year old. He has already had salmon poisoning and fought right through it like it was nothing. He is a wonderful dog.

Re: Salmonella......?
Fishfinder, my dog had it last year and had to be put on IV for most of a day and then antibiotics for over a month. Get him to the vet ASAP as ahs been said before.

Re: Salmonella......?
Good news! He seems to be comeing around! I Have taken some wet dog food and put it in the blender w/a little water. I put this in a water bottle and fed him like he was a baby. This helped him keep the antibiotics down and he seems to have a little more energy today!!! About fifteen minutes ago he took a piece of pork scrap form me and ate it right down! I know its early but here's some good signs.

Re: Salmonella......?
FishFinder1, i hope your dog gets well soon. I have a boxer and couldn't imagine what a wreck I'll be if he gets sick. Just last night he was out playing in the snow just like when I brought him home. My wife tells me He is my baby. Now I have a daughter but he is still my little buddy. Best wishes and happy new year.

Re: Salmonella......?
I tell you what Damon and his father are fun fishing dogs....now if I could only get him to cross the rivers and swim we will be doing even better.
But, all in all, we do say thanks for the prayers.
He is laying here at my feet and he says thanks.
We will see you all out on the rivers as long as it is not snowing.
