Default Power Pro on a spinning reel?

I just wrote a column for ifish on this very topic. I'd be interested in your thoughts, and how many of you use braided lines on your spinning reels.

Click here for my latest column!

Happy New Year, and best fishing to you all,

Stan

Great article. Wish I would have been able to read it a couple of years ago. I'm looking forward to reading more of your articles.

I just put a braid on my spinning reel this season for bobber n jig fishing. So far I am more than satisfied with its performance. Likely will never go back to mono for my spinning reels.

Good article, Stan.

The article mentions using Power Pro on a level wind. I have been thinking of using this for drift fishing steelhead from the bank. I cannot see my line at times and thinking this might help. Thoughts on putting this stuff on my Curado?

Power Pro on a quality spinning reel is the absolute best way to go. If you are jig fishing, side drifting, or plain drift fishing, the braided lines are outstanding. Being able to see the entry into the water is critical for certain applications.

One word of caution. Inspect the guides on your rods frequently as the line will cut into the ceramic over time. Good quality guides are the key. I have replaced all of the tips on my rods with quality guides and greatly reduced the problem.

I tried Power Pro on a spinning reel earlier in the year. Loved everything about it except 2 things:

1) At the time I was using the really lightweight stuff (probably 20# or so) and it was cutting into the spooled line.

2) Even though it might tangle less than mono, when it did tangle (on me anyway) it wasn't coming undone. Even the slightest knot forced me to cut and retie.

I went back to mono (UG) for spinning and used Power pro on all my boat reels. I may try a larger Power Pro this year on the spinning rig to see if that makes any difference.

Braid works great on spinning reels. The only thing I'd add is to keep an eye out for line twist. When twist happens, the line will wrap around the tip of your rod and since it's so strong, it can break it.

Stan

I love using Power Pro on my spinning reels. Casting is so much easier and for float fishing it's hard to beat.

I really enjoy your articles.

Spinning Reel for bobber/jig?

I was using braided line on my
spinning reels when you still lived on Silver lake. And still use it but now power pro.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Glad you liked the piece on Power Pro. I love that line. I think I've used most of the braids at one time or other. Power Pro, in my opinion, is the best of the lot.

You might be interested in some of my past feature stories that are in the archives. Take a look when time permits.

Warm regards.

Looks like I'm not the only one who has discovered
just how well Power Pro lines perform. Someone asked a question about leader length. Let the problems you're up against determine that for you. In gin clear water use a longer leader, etc.

I've found times in bass fishing when I was better off with no leader at all---when I'm fishing heavy pad cover for example. Then the Power Pro, in the green shade) matches the cover
in good shape.

Note what I said in my column with regard to where I prefer to have the knot when I'm using a level wind reel.

Thanks to all of you who found the Power Pro piece of interest and i appreciate the kind words.

I just put power pro on one of my spinning combos. I like it, but it is very diffrent from mono. I just have to get to know it a little better. Other than that it's great.

You're right, braided line does have a different
"feel" that takes some getting used to. And all braids aren't the same. I tried some when the new small diameter/strong test variety first hit the market several years ago. I had a miserable time with it.

Power Pro was one of the last of the braids to appear. Its makers have managed to come up with a product that doesn't have the problems inherent in those earlier braid models.

As a matter of fact, many of the first braids introduced are no longer being sold. They flat didn't live up to their billing.

Power Pro does. Again---I love it! I'm using it for my casting demonstrations around the country as well as darn near all of my fishing.

Attention Safety Chain!

You asked about using Power Pro on your Curado reel. That's one of the reels I use it on all the time.

I've used everthing on my Curados from 20 to 65-pound test. I had four of them filled with 65-pound when I went into the Amazon last year to fish for peacock bass. Believe it or not, that wasn't a bit too strong. The outfitter recommended 80-pound.

The 65-pound Power Pro was still small enough in diameter to let me get the distance I needed in heaving big Woodchopper plugs at those wild-eyed
pea*****.
