BAN BARBED HOOKS
Everytime I fish spinners and forget to pinch the barbs I lose fish.
Wilson River gorgous hen, spit, goodbye.
I have never lost a fish on a barbless hook. Any thoughts?

Deeper penetration without the barb.

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
Might consider switching to siwash hooks. One hook vs. three will peirce with less pressure past the barb. It's an easier hookset.
Just a thought.

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
I think you been lucky RPN I can remember one day going 1 for 13 on barbless hooks.
it could be the type of hook your using maybe the shaft is to large making the barb even larger.
if you build your spinners yourself try going to a thin wire hook and see if that works.
I remember one time I bought a 100 pack of some mustads they werent the ones I always used I kept losing fish left and right so I found the perticular ones I had always used and compared them the ones i kept losing fish on were heavier wire and had a barb twice the size
I guess a bigger hook has to poke a bigger hole and neds a harder hook set to puncture then fishes mouth is all I can figure out.

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
What type of hooks are you using?
Some brands have a much larger barb than others and it also depends on the point style of the hook also. Not all barbed hooks are made the same

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
The only reason you would lose fish on barbed hooks over barbless is if you arnt sinking the hook in deep enough to get the barb under the skin. As to why I don't know, maybe sharper hooks are in order. But a barbless hook acts the same as a barbless, only once the barb is under the skin, its harder to remove.

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
I think due to leverage and mass you'll never have a real good landing percentage with spinners. The guys with the siwash's may do better, I haven't tried it enough times to know. I can remember days on the santiam hooking 8-10 fish on spinners and landing only a few. It was a blast though...

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
My catch ratio went way up when I went barbless. Try it you wont be sorry. The hook gets in way deeper. and as long as you dont give em slack its way more affective.

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
I typically use barbless even when its not required. I think I get better hook ups, when barbless, and if you don't give them any slack, you don't lose many fish.

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
I lose a lot of steelies to trebles and spinners.
I like single hooks. Usually siwash.

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
I occasionally lose a fish on barbless but not very often.
A well hooked fish wont come loose with a tight line.

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
Pitching blades in tidewater for chinooks this year, My fishing partner (not me soo much) had really good success with 2 ot owner trebles, averaging above 90% on the landing ratio.

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
1 get a rod with some backbone, 2 try and break the rod on the hookset, Should bury it fairly good. 3 If the rod breaks get a stronger rod and repeat till fish are on the bank. It works for me.

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
I started Jordan fishing out of his play pen at 3. God that was a mistake. Or was it the 10 ft Sturgeon at 10 or the 30lb Chinook at 7 or Marrmot dam at 5?
Jordan, I found some new/old holes on the Sandy. Pretty sweet.......................... And no smart guy I didn't catch any fish.........................

Re: BAN BARBED HOOKS
I wouldn't know about losing fish with barbed or barbless hooks since I seldom seem to hook any.
I mostly flyfish and I do know that the barbless are a lot easier to extract from my ear.
