Default 400,000 five-year Springers are predicted--

I tonights paper I read that 400,000 five-year Springers are predicted to head up the Columbia in the next few months.

This is very exciting news. I'm going to have to quit sitting on the board whining and start tying gear!!!

Whoooeeee!

I believe the number above is the total run size. 20k is the projected 5 year old portion. I hope to start fishing there in March. Looks like it will be a good year!

The number seems to keep going up, I love it. Last time I saw something it was 300K, now 400K? It is going to be a fine year.

Not to spoil the enthusiasm, but that seems a little off. Which paper was it? WDFW and ODFW announced a different figure.

The figure I heard (if I remember and there are no guarantees) was 361,000 springers, 90 percent four-year-olds. That's good news, but even better is that 70 percent will be marked instead of last year's 40-50 percent. That's good news, too, but the very best is for 2005 because the run consists primarily of four and five year fish...if the four year contingent is this strong, we've got another one coming right behind it...

Here's the official Columbia River Fish Forecast. I don't have explanations for the numbers, like how many of the 360,700 Upriver Spring Chinook are wild v. hatchery ... but make of it what you will!

Pete, be sure to bring your camera with you again this year to capture the moment that CATCH AND EAT gets his first springer.!!!! That was pretty cool of ya last year. Just gotta get that one pesky 2004 steelhead out of the way and I'm good to go on the springers.
