Default whats the best motor ever made???

Me and some of my buddies were having a few cold beverages and the topic came up of the best truck motors ever made. IMO i was arguing the 300 inline 6cyl is by far the best motor ever produced by any manufacturer. Ford finally did something right for once. Keep in mind i am NOT a ford guy by any means even though i have a (farm Ferrari 86 f150 2wd 4spd manual) with the 300, I have a 08 dodge quad cab 4wd, and i have a good feeling the ford will out pull my dodge all day long, granted im not talking long distance but on weight. I will guarantee this in 20 yrs from now my ford will still fire right up, not so sure on the dodge, The best p[art of the 300 inline is that i get 23 mpg on the hwy. i would be curious of what the fellow ifishers have to say.

(diesels need not apply that would not be a fair fight)

I had a 95 f-150 with the 300, I bought it with 68,000 miles, drove it about 40k more and sold it to my brother. good truck, just boring.

i'm fond of small trucks since I don't tow anything more than a drift boat, my favorite engine is the 4.3 liter vortec, my zr2 was a cool little truck until it went up in flames. basically same hp rating as the 3.4 Toyota motor, but waaaaaaay more beans, and they run a long time

I had a 74 f100 with a 300 6 in it. Sold the truck with 260k and it was still going strong. I have a beater 93 f150 with a 300 6 in and a 5 speed. I bought it with 300k on it and it is showing 340k on the meter at the moment, it doesn't get drove much, but it fires right up when needed. I had a 94 dodge with a 5.9, Ibought it new and when I traded it in, It was just shy of 200k, the only thing i ever had to do to that motor was change the oil and a water pump. It did go through 3 transmissions in that time though. I don't think many can argue the 300 6 is as tough as they come.

My favorite is the Nissan sd22 diesel. Not much power but gets 40 mpg. If it wears out you can pull the cylinder liners in car if you wanted. Mine has almost 300000 miles. Still runs good and tows my little boat fine.

Talking gassers the 300 is great. Have to add the Chevy 292 and 270 6 cylinders. Also the Chev 283,327,350. Ford 289. All great motors.

Mercedes' 1978 5-cylinder diesel. A version still powers hundreds of thousands of pre-2008 Sprinters and other vehicles around the world.

In the U.S., the Chrysler 225 slant 6 (1974 or thereabouts) was a marvelous engine.

I was gonna say the GM 4-bolt 350, but I think I have to agree with the Toyota 22R. That thing is bomb-proof.

22R .. no doubt.

250K on mine.. used and abused. Father took his over 200K as well. This is what the japanese embarrassed the US motor biz with. Back when the 20R and 22R came out it was rare to see many V8s run much longer than 120k and be reliable.

Had an old 1965 f250 camper special with the 300 -6 CYL.
When I had this truck many years ago I
was cutting fire wood at the mill in Estacada with a fella that worked there. Had side boards on the Old Ford and we loaded it to the top and all the way to the tail gate. The rounds we were cutting were not very dry.

We ran it across the scales and the gross weight was 10,300 pounds had to haul it all the way up to a friends place on Sleepy Hollow Drive. Some good hills between Estacada and Sandy. and that old 300 with manual 4 SPD. did just fine pulling the hills Not a speed demon by no means.

That Toyota 22R was a dang good engine.

The 4 L in my 2011 Ford Ranger is no slouch for a small truck even though it has an automatic tranny.

Hard to pick just one. So here's a few I've tried to wear out.

7.3 powerstroke turbo diesel. It ain't pretty but it won't wear out. 400K and still going strong.

5.7 Liter (350) chevy small block. I've built probably 20 of these over the years and run one in my boat now. Nothing sounds like a 350 when it's turning gasoline into wide open power.

22R had one in a Toyota celica.

3 Liter (181) chevy. Mercruiser used these for boat engines. Best mileage and 140 horses. Tough little motor. This is the old Iron duke with 1.65 rockers and more bore. Like a rock.

for gas motors I used and abused a 300ci ^cyl Ford, great engine
22r absolutely
Jeep 4.0
I would add Jeep 4.2 while the basic motor was great all the other junk hanging off it not so much
Another work horse I really had good luck with is Chrysler slant sixs

I've always loved the power a straight 6 puts out and the two best I've had were:

M30 BMW in a 535I
4.0 Jeep in a Comanche pickup

Anything inline really seams to be the best don't know why but read the replies and the trend is straight or inline is the ticket, and along those lines my cummins is a inline 6, "6 in a row makes them go!"

Gas: Toyota 22r, I swear you could never change the oil in one of those and they will still go 300,000 miles.

Diesel: 5.9 Cummins, 1.9 TDI, 7.3 Powerstroke and 06+ 6.6 Duramax.

Gas V8= 318 Mopar for longevity.
Gas I-6=300 ford for pickups and 225 slant-6 for cars.
The Datsun L series four bangers were extremely durable in all their versions, with some of the highest quality, and most durable castings I ever saw (1600-1800-2000).

Among the diesels, nothing can touch the Cummins for durability, especially when loaded heavily, and regularly.

Straight 6's are hard to beat, gas or diesel, for power, fuel economy, and longevity.

Ford 300 I6 was the best gas motor I've ever had and I've had several 300 6's.

Cummins I6 is the best Diesel motor I've ever had.

22R or RE for toys and 300 sixes in the ford I have owned them both and if you want to tow a half a house the the 300 six, but those 22R's are some bad boys for lighter loads like under 1500lbs.

22r is probably the "correct" answer but if I could wish up a pile of new engines I would wish up a pile of 327cu. in. fuel injected Corvette engines from the '60s.

Coincidence. I too had a 340 Cuda in high school. Very quick. Used to collect gas money off ricers and 5.0 mustangs. A lot of big blocks fell to that car too. Greatest motor ever? Nah. But it was an awesome car

My vote for worst motor ever. 302 fords, 6.0 power stroke, jeep tornado 6 cant stay together
Most overhyped motor 350 chev

I bought a 1957 chevy 2 ton truck from a old farmer in Brownsvile about 20 years ago to build a truck to haul horses in to the mountains. He told me he bought it new and it had only left the farm one time to go to Portland to buy a load of feed. I took it home and over to a friends body shop to steam clean and sandblast to prep for the new build. under the old red paint it was green and white and said 7up on the door.lol it also had a 1959 Michigan plate way back under the flat bed. Any way long story short that old truck had a 235 blueflame and it was still running 10 years later when i sold the truck.

I had the 235 in-line 6 in my first rig, a '65 Chevy Van was a great motor, but I have to go with Ford's 300, in-line 6. The 300 is kinda like a 30-'06, not to glamorous, but still does the job!!! Unfortunately they aren't making the 300 anymore, thank the good lord the 30-'06 is still going strong!!!!

As for imports, the 22R.

I bought a 76 power wagon about 18 years ago . Got it for 400 bucks guy said it had electrical problem . Got home and started messing with it . Turns out it had a 340 with the six PAC heads . That thing would come in glued at about 3 k rpm . O yea it cost me next to nothing to swap out about all three Componets of the electrical systems

My vote for worst motor ever. 302 fords, 6.0 power stroke, jeep tornado 6 cant stay together
Most overhyped motor 350 chev
Indeed hard to beet a built 340 . Mine was in a 1/2 ton truck but still one of my most favorite rigs ever .

I think honorable mention should go the Toyota 3.4L V6. My 99 Tacoma has been amazing. 265,000 miles and other than maintenance work it has never had a problem. Does not leak or burn oil and still get gas mileage similar to when I bought it with 13,000 miles.

Detroit Diesel Series 60! But the newer DD15's are a close second.

There is an episode of top gear where they anchored a Toyota hilux 22r on the beach and let the tide come in. The next day they changed the oil and kept driving it.

Too hot to drive (temperature wise) and my leg barely pushed in the clutch. Guys looked at me funny.

Just paying off bills so I can have someone rebuild my 1977 Firebird T/A with a factory 4 speed that I bought brand new in 1977.

So far, the 2003 Mitsubishi 3.0 L engine is being nice. Enough to tow the boat and still be conservative on gas. Going on 10 years of ownership with just one timing belt change and synthetic oil changes. I know I am due for another belt change soon.

Another vote for 22r, or even better is the re. Those things just run forever and cost nothing to maintain.

If you need a little more power then 5.9 cummins or 7.3 powerstroke. LBZ duramax was no slouch either.

As mentioned in one earlier post, those Datsun L series engines. I have seen them coaxed back to life, only to endure years of teenage abuse and neglect, yet still get us to school on Monday. ( Unless we had plans to go to Sauvie's Island.) Too bad you can't get a running beater 510 for $300 anymore

I agree that the 22R (E) is a GREAT engine, but how can you argue with the small block Chevy (pick your cu in). Even Ford guys put them in their hot rods!!

Chevy 283. Easy to get 450 hp at 9 to 1 compression with stock parts and a bit of fine tuning.

Toyota 4 banger 22r. And not just because I own one. I have friends that have older models with really high mileage and few, if any, problems.

I don't get that Toyota 4 cylinder is a truck motor since it isn't in a full size truck. Obviously, many disagree.
