Yeah I would probably just clean my catch and go home. If there were other species present I guess I would keep fishing for them if that were allowable.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">If you limit out on steelhead but keep fishing for "whitefish" with the same rod, reel, and a bait/lure that is customarily used for steelhead, you might have a tough time talking your way out of a citation  .

I for one do not like to fish for fish that I can not keep. I feel catch and release just wears them down and does more damage than taking your limit and leaving. I do not really understand the catch and release sceen, I have always been taught that fish and game were there to eat, take what you need and leave the rest allon for anouther day. I do believe that sturgen are also a much tougher fish and can handle the abuse of being fought and released better than can salmon, steelhead, and trout. That may have somthing to do with why it is allowed with sturgen. Just my opinion.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Finding a cure for the common cold  would be more admirable, as I am tired of playing this one out and playing catch and release with others.
Also, if you are on a mission to get the rules changed, would advise you spend some time really understanding both species along with methods and bodies of water where present. The rules currently in place were not decided upon by a beer chugging contest or flip of the coin.
Just curious,if you are "alwyze fishin" are you "alwyze catchin"?

If you are always catchin, then THE CONSIDERATE thing to do is to quit fishing and let someone else have a shot at the sweet spot. Maybe its you with your son on his first outing or grandpa's last and just one fish would bring a lifetime of memories.
Don't know about you, but I am sure the majority of the 5,999 other ifish members would feel pretty good about something like that.

I don't eat fish and very seldom keep any. So I guess I could keep all of the legal fish I catch until my tag is full, and possibly do even more damage to the fishery. Well maybe not that much damage!

So I guess the question is: Do I do more damage with catch and release than I would with keeping all fish that I am allowed???

I sturgeon fish EVERY weekend, and I have 0 sturgeon on my tag for the year! At least the ones I released have a chance!

Please tell me how where going to get mortality Data on Columbia River Spring Chinook without Catch and Release. I just wish a study could be done in conjunction with the state (WA and OR)rather than independently. Catch and release is one of the keys to us fishing longer on the spring fish.

This would be an interesting fight in court. Say you caught your limit of steelies, but kept fishing anyway to target "other species." Sure enough you land another steelhead, which you release. He turns belly up, drifting away as the warden is watching.

Do you own the dead fish, putting you over the limit. I wonder what the judge would say?

" Page 12 2004 Oregon Sportfishing Regulations The following activities are unlawful: #14 Continuing to angle for the same type of fish after taking and retaining a catch or possession limit.

Simple enough. Unlawful.

Since it was my major in school, that is, Fisheries and Wildlife Law Enforcement, yes, I have and do read the regs quite often.

I would love to help you with your hunting questions. What seasons and animals do you have in question and I'll try my best to clarify them for you.

Boater

I realize all wild fish (non-clipped) must be released. This does'nt mean all clipped fish must also be killed( I realize a persentage is purposly not clipped). Their are to few native fish in the system to do a mortality study using natives only. I know alot of people want to see all hatchery fish removed from the water shed for the sake of the native fish, but really, how many Snake River fish are truly native or wild? Very Few when you talk to the experts.

Before fishing, make a decision: Do you want to bring home fish? If so, stop at the grocery store on your way, buy whatever you want, then go fishing. This way you enjoy fishing with no pressure to land anything, and you bring home fish. If the opportunity presents itself, bonk one legal keeper, and then keep fishing, releasing what you catch. When you're close to leaving, if you happen to land another one, bonk it and bring it home. If you don't land a keeper, so what?

Or, you can go fishing and have the success of the trip depend on whether or not you land one you can bring home.

I've killed plenty of fish; There are several winter steelhead in my freezer now, one in my smoker, and one in my fridge. I have nothing against keeping a fish that's legal to keep, and I usually do so.

On the other hand, I've also have had great fishing days where I brought home nothing but a cool rock for my son, a muskrat skull for my daughter, and some pretty flowers for my wife. Some of those days I caught fish and released them. Other days I didn't hook even a snag I could pretend was a fish.

At some point you need to decide if you're going fishing or if you're going catching. They're sometimes two very different things.

I was kind of bummed when I tagged my first limit this year. The first silver was a hand-off as I'm not accustomed to catching many fish on my own but still like to eat fish. The next two fish were hot and back-to-back. I've never had fishing like that before. My success was tempered by the fact that I was done for the day (in less time than it took to get into my waders).

I'll second glassblower's post too: catch and release tires the fish out, increasing the chances that they'll die and making for a less vigorous fight for the next person who hooks into them. Take only what you need and leave the rest for someone else.
