Default How Many Fish in 2003????

Last year about this time someone posted this thread and I was amazed  at all the fish killers out there so I wanted to see how everybody fared in 2003!

Here are my numbers from my boat log... keep in mind these are totals for my boat for fish that were actually landed, kept and/or released. I averaged 2.74 people per trip.

Sturgeon 124 keepers in 46 trips.
Spring Salmon 93 in 33 trips.
Summer Salmon 20 in 13 trips.
Fall Salmon 141 in 35 trips (this includes only one ocean trip and one Tillamook trip).
Thats a total of 254 salmon in 81 trips.
Steelhead 15 fish in 14 trips.
Too many shad to count in 5 trips.

Not bad for the first full year I owned my boat and I expect to do better in 2004 now that I have a clue Looking back over my logs I want to get in some more ocean days next year as the only day I went out we were only one fish shy of a boat limit. I only fished Tillamook once this year... next year I will try a little harder, plus I will have some more room on my tag with some better tag management now that I have my WA license for the Columbia. I also need to find some more time to fish for steelhead but I love fishing for salmon and sturgeon too much!

So lets see your numbers you Ifish slayers and heres to a great 2004 for everyone!

Well my year didnt go good at all for steelhead and salmon, but trout was great as usual.

Chum Salmon-30
chinook-0-take downs-1
Steelhead-0-take downs-2
trout-around 500
A bunch of other species, no sturgeon either...

I mainly trout fish, and out of those fish I only ate about 3 of them.

Maybe someone here can take me to catch my first chromer???

Gee...Doesn't that calculate to you fishing 40% of the total days of the year?

Shane...after a few years like that...you'll quit counting, and just remember that it was REAL good.

5-cents,
Mighty impressive numbers. Would be great to fish that much. I'm not a numbers guy so I never really kept track of totals. I know I just had a blast. Even better than fish counts was the number of cool Ifish dudes I fished with this year. As for fish, I had some really good days and some real slow days, but over all an average year, especially considering my boy was born in mid summer so most of the summer and fall was spent on diaper duty instead of casting a line, but you'll get no complaints out of me there.
2004 should be a great year though!

I love stuff like this...

I too am a weekend warrior for the most part, I was able to take a few days off during Springer season last year.. and during the Fall season I fish after work a few days a week..

Will start with last years steelies and work towards the present!

These are numbers of boated fish in my boat

87 steelies, 23 trips
68 springers 24 trips
92 Chinook (after July 1, 2003) 33 trips
13 Stripers in 6 trips

This year I plan on spending more time in the big boat chasing sturgeon and steelies and less time in the DB in Feb. March

Sorry Shane, lost count long ago but I will say that it's less than you or Mission on the springers and fall nooks but the coho.....I think we can compare notes on those any day. Tuna well thanks to Miss B Haven and Kamloops I have a nice couple of shelves of that. Sturgeon, I kept three and released....sorry, lost count. Chum I can tell you exactly 137, cause Pop's and I were keeping score. Steelhead 5 kept one released.

For the most part not really worth keeping score any longer. Just enjoying fishing with Pops and My friends makes it worth while. Met lots of nice folks here on i-fish and have fished with some of you too. Looking forward to more of that action this year. Bring on the Springers. Opps, gotta catch that first 2004 steelhead before the springers hit.

I've kept my notes also....
(5) URB Chinook kept, (1) released
(1) Trask River Chinook
(2) Summer Steelies kept, (2) released
(1) Winter Steelie kept, (1) nate released

Some firsts for me this year - 1st URB, 1st Trask Chinook, 1st Summer run steelie. Definitely my most successful year ever.

I've met and fished with some great people this year. The memories of those I've fished with far outweigh the list of fish in my freezer.

Thanks for the friendships.

springers 1 for four trips
summers 0 for 0 trips
I had too much to do earlier in the year, didn't get out much.

Buoy 10 - 1 coho for one trip
Fall coast 12 for 12 trips, released a few.
winters 3 for 5 trips
Shad, lost count in 3 trips
Crab/clam combo trip: 8 crab, 80 clam, 4 people - Newport Bay. Thanks to someone on ifish telling me a really cool clamming spot. It's better than Netarts by far. Carrotmilk attracted the clams, no just kidding.

Shane,

Mighty impressive...but I really don't know or care about how many I caught or my boat caught but by your numbers it sounds like a couple of my Ocean trips...

Ditto on what ****** & Hogback has said...

I am just happy & fortunate for the next trip the good Lord affords me...who cares if I catch...all I care about is the time spent on the water with family & friends...

Statistics are over rated...

Well lets see,

0 springers for 4 trips, but 8 lost
18 winter steelhead for 7 trips
4 summers steelhead for 4 trips
47 coho boated in 7 trips
3 keeper sturgeon 7 trips
5 fall chinook 7 trips

This was the first year that I owned a boat, I need some help with those springer's they are P***ing me off!

This was most fish I've ever caught in a year, so it was great. I would love to catch over 90 springers though.

Oh comon guys... I remember last year reading this same thread going    YIKES thats a lot of fish!

I find keeping a log book with the weather, water temp, where I fished, how many the boat caught, what was used, etc.... will help me the next year plan some trips in advance and elimante the ones that did not work out.

You guys are right, it really doesnt matter how many you catch, getting out there and spending the time with good buddies and family IS what it is all about... but keeping score is still fun, I just love trying to top myself.

5 cents.....salmon=0, steel=0, sturgeon=0.....bazillions of squishy soft stocker trout. I'd crawl 40 miles over broken glass to sniff the tracks of the laundry truck that took your dirty shorts away to get a ride in your boat sometime to fish. I know you fish near St. Helens alot, and I just happen to live there. Next time you go and have an open seat, feel free to let me know. I don't fall down much, tho the time I wrapped the anchor chain around my ankle was pretty good. Haven't kicked over the tackle box in about a week and my wife makes me shower once in a while. I really need a salmon/steelhead/sturgeon mentor, or should I just continue to throw $100 bills in the river every week..........

Its all good...I am in the process of trying to repair my torn apart team and I will most likely be representing despite my sturgeon fishing handicap...

I typically do OK under pressure but this is reaching new levels

It looks like if I can talk my last partner "Hogback" in staying on the team and getting "Spooled" on there....I will be good to go...

Well I didn't catch as many as a lot of you but the most important thing was I mostly enjoyed myself no matter how the trip turned out.
Got to fish with my sons a lot and that was always good! You guys who get to do this know what I mean.
I also have a great fishing buddy in Mark Anderson so any trip out with him was a success.
Mostly though I learned that tagging a fish wasn't always the mark of a successful trip. I managed to avoid the myriad of conflicts that seem to be more present than ever especially this past fall salmon season. So since I didn't get too riled up about someone anchoring too close to me or someone being in my favorite hole or didn't need to yell at someone in anger while I'm supposed to be enjoying myself then I had a great season

I agree keeping track will show you patterns that will help you in the long run.Won't post numbers but will brag about a four day period on a favorite river last winter where we landed 17 steelhead for two people with the same offering in the same little slot,Good pattern there

I think i'm gonna have to add to the "It was a good year" comment. I was about 5 short of filling my tag but got the boys into fish which meant alot more to me  Starting Jan 1, i'm gonna start a log for the first time...take notes.
I think it just seemed like a better year to me cuz i got the new boat and could bring more of my family with me...I still have two shopping bags full of Vac Pac Salmon stacked in my freezer that i'm gonna share and eat before i start bonking SPRINGERS So next year i will have a more detailed report

I'm not a numbers guy. I did however have a fantastic winter steelhead season followed by an amazing summer steelhead season followed by a great Fall Chinook season. It was all good.

Sturgeon- Astoria area 14 trips- 68 keepers
Portland area and above- I don't keep
track, it's all pre season leading up
to the estuary.

Salmon- Springers- 9 trips- 7 fish. I don't have
this one dialed in yet.

URB's- 8 trips- 28 fish. I didn't have
that much time in the water due to some
boat trouble.

Ocean chinook- 10
Ocean coho- It would take three math
majors to figure that one out. We had
anywhere from 15 on a slow day to 40
fish days out in the salt.

Halibut- On my boat we got two for two
trips. The rock pile I feel comfortable
going but the chicken ranch is just to
far for my boat.

Bottom fish- probably about two tons.

Channel cat- 4 trips- two fish. I am
still figuring that one out on the
Columbia.

I too keep a log on my boat. Not for bragging rights or numbers but for quick information when the bite is slow or for coming up with a game plan for putting friends and family into fish.

I had my best year yet.

Springers river 1 trip 1 fish
coho river 3 trips 1 jack
salt water in U.S. salmon 1 trip 4 fish for the boat
salt water canada 6 days 150+ salmon for four guys
trout lots three days on the opening in april
crabs 4 trips 134 keepers

I end up letting the guys catch most of the fish on my boat. I enjoy just getting them into the fish. When your the captain they should count as yours anyway. My gear, my location, my netting skills, Their beer and sandwiches.

Short list compared to most...........

a couple dozen rainbow trout taken at various lakes.

3 Brown trout taken at goose lake

7 steelhead, kept 2

1 humpy

5 choho, kept 2 and had one given to me at the end of the day.

2 small ling cod, didn't keep either of them

1 Chinook, native jack

0 Sturgeon

5-cents....good thinking on keeping a log of where, what, when, temp. all that.... I will try that in 04'

This is the first year I actually kept a log and it does make a big difference. I don't know why it took me so long to do so. I think I got the idea off someone here on Ifish.

Here's my 2003 numbers
(includes guests I picked up off the street)

Sturgeon
1 keeper, ? shakers @ 3 trips

Winter Steelhead (Jan, Feb)
7 Native, 15 Hatchery & 10 lost @ 9 trips

Spring Chinook
21 Natives, 46 Hatchery & 11 lost @ 41 trips

Summer Chinook
0 fish @ 4 trips (first year targeting and very disappointed)

Summer Steelhead
16 Natives, 1 hatchery & 2 lost @ 3 trips (Nov 30, 2003 was my best Steelhead day ever)

Fall Chinook & Coho
40 Kings & 6 lost @ 27 trips
18 Coho all released except for 2 18+ pounders

Trout
18 all released

Shad

Sea Gulls
2-all released

Winter Steelhead (Dec)
3 Hatchery & 2 lost @ 5 trips (it hasn't been that great for me, YET!)

I Can't take full credit for my numbers cause it's been a combined effort from my Ifish brothers & sisters. Over the course of this year I sent countless e-mails to various ifishers who I thought could add to my knowledge of fishing and in doing so my hook ups increased, plain and simple, not to mention all those informative posts. I want to thank everyone who helped out. All your posts are important (well most)

Thanks for a great year Ifishers
Happy new years

Shane - I'd post my numbers, but if the Bar Association were to log on to ifish and add up the number of hours I spent on the water to my billable hours "in the office" for the year, I think they'd conclude I'm going to prison....

Besides, if I did post, all I'd do is take your numbers and add 5%...

"TAG MANAGEMENT" - hope someone got XTC a book on that for Christmas.....it's my new year's resolution

Congratulations, Shane on a great year. Hope next year is even better for you!

don't know all the numbers, sorta lost track of the log this year.
It was the first year I hit the century mark for steelhead though (about 110 give or take a couple).

Took alot of friends, family, and co-workers salmon fishing...made sure they did most of the catching, but we boated about 60-70 salmon. Limiting most days on the fall fish, and holding our own on the springers

Chris you gotta love the estuary... I'm just itching for the year to start:

Springers
Estuary Sturg
Summer Salmon & Rogue River
Ocean Salmon
Fall Salmon

This has to be the slowest time of year

Chris we will definately get together for some springer trips!

I have no I dea how many trips I made but I caught 18 hatchery stealhead 9 native. 3 Silver salmon and 9 Chinook. OUt of two trips I got 1 50 and 1/2" Sturgeon. I see there are some serious fisherman here on the board. I hope to do better Next year as I will have more experience.

I did very well after 42 fishless trip. I'm serious, 42 trips without a fish. Here's a big tip, don't use a zippo lighter while fishing.
Quit that and it was fish on every trip.

Husker talk like that will end with you reciving the BATON.
I caught one Springer in Washington and One in Oregon, now don't laugh this was just enough for me to pass on the Baton to Mofish .
Life is good now.

944 salmon and steelhead.

If I added the team effort chinook catch GRB and I did up in Canada when we took a vacation up north it would be over 1,000.

I keep "score" in a log book for myself to compair each season and see how I'm improving and also so I can give accurate estamates on what to expect for each fishing season. I like to do fish/trip averages for each season for this.
