NF Alsea and Jig Fishing
Well, my in-laws were in town from the midwest over Christmas, and I got to take my Father and brother-in-laws out to do a little steelhead fishing on Friday the 26th. I rigged them up with jigs as it seemed the best way to keep them fishing without snagging up on the bottom or losing all my spinners and other gear. I've had some First Cast jigs for a while, but hadn't given them too much fishing time until Friday. Never have hooked or caught a fish on a jig, yet.
I sat them in a hole around Clemens park for a couple of hours . . . and I watched my Father-in-law miss a strike . . . the bobber slipped under water after having fished the same water for two hours without ever having hit bottom before. Too much slack on the hookset, dangit!
Took them downstream for a break to see if any steelies were jumping the falls on Fall Creek (none that day) . . . and after that we hit another spot on the N. Fork where we all spread out a little more, and moved around a lot. Here, my Father-in-law actually hooked into a fish with the pink and white jig. I happened to be downstream quite a ways where I couldn't help him out, and he lost it after a couple of minutes, as he wasn't used to fighting a fish like this. It was taking a bunch a line, so he tightened down the drag to stop him! SNAP! But it was very nice to get him into some action, especially with all the times that I go out and get skunked myself while chasing winter steelhead.
It was also nice for them to see just how cold it can be here in "mild" Oregon when you stand in a river being supplied by the fresh snow in the coast range. All in all, not a bad day, only lost three jigs, and my guiding skills are getting better and better!
