Default Strange Sturgeon (pic)

Anyone ever catch and release this fish before???? Good day and no keepers. The one below was legal if it's back was not deformed. One other 1/4 inch to short. Great bite and lot's of fish in the 30 range.

Maybe some day some lucky angler will get to take this prize home.

Good catch Dave!

Gillnet accident ?

Could that be caused by improper tailing when it was younger ?

Catching and eating fish from a superfund site is risky business. Release all Willamette fish.

Yeah it would have went around 45" if that whatever it is was streched out. I did not notice the black spots until you said something. I was to busy looking at the yoga deal and getting the camera. I have caught sturgeon with no tails. I was told that gill netters cut them off. Anyone ever heard of this? I guess part of the fun of sturgeon fishing is seeing what strange things you can pull up. We also got one with two hooks hanging out of it's *******. We cut them off and put it back. Talk about a hemroid

Never caught one like that but I did release one like that before I caught a shaker this last spring down out of Astoria. When un hooking it ,it fliped away from me ,hit the deck and floped a few times against the engine cover. When I finaly was able to get ahold of it again it had a bend in it that looked just like that fish.I figured it either pulled a muscle or was scrunching up to apear smaller My brother and I each gave it a tug hoping to straiten it but to no avail.Aside from the strange kink and some guilt I was feeling the fish other wise seemed unharmed. It was released and swam off like nothing ever happened.I still have no idea what actualy caused it to kink up,at the time I thought it may have been a muscle cramp, gave me a charlie horse just looking at it.Allthough the chances of that being the same fish are rare,I thought my fish would straighten out on it's own after release, maybe not.

I think it is from being caught and injured in a gillnet when it was younger. I have seen this before on a tagged sturgeon. Another reason to ban gillnetting!

That poor fish has enough problems, please just leave it in the water and release it.

It might have been caught by one of the Oregon City Wall fishers who tossed back a shaker from 100 ft up.

I think they should ban sturgeon fishing from high places.

Looks like someone probably stomped on it as a shaker to stretch it then let it go.

I caught a fish similar to that one just west of Longview last year, only smaller. Reminds me of the days working for a local rod manf. co. and we had our co. picnic complete with fishing derby at Trojan!

Ya know, some fish are just born with stuff like this. It happens in all kinds of fish, people too. There doesn't have to be a sinister reason behind it, it just is.

Dave- I just talked to a friend of mine who has a degree in fisheries science and he says that it is could very well be from getting electroshocked. The fish and wildlife goes out and does studies on the rivers. They electro shock fish during some of those studies. He said that it can sometimes break the cartilage in their back if they are in the testing area and get shocked.

Take a look at the page one story in "The Oregonian" Wednesday about the deformities in fish at the Newberg Pool. This looks alot like what is happening to the fish there, the sturgeon could have been from there too.

Was the sturgeon bent like that before you brought it out of the water? They have no bone structure to support their own weight. Maybe he broke when he was lifted out of the water....
Who knows..
Have you read the paper about the parasites deforming the minnows above willamette falls in the tualitan pool. They are similar...

I agree with Bernie, a sea lion attack. I caught a steelhead that looked just like that. It was way up the Hood River. The back bone was actually broken, but the spinal cord was still in tack. It takes a real dedicated fish to get that far up river with a broken back. Fishrite
