Default Umpqua Shad -- Not Yet

I fished the Umpqua on Wednesday below the hamlet of Umpqua, looking for shad to exercise my fly rod. Found no shad, nor shad fishers other than the boat putting in at the ramp and they said they were also looking for shad. Maybe next week.

Default Re: Umpqua Shad -- Not Yet

I just finished a book called "The Founding Fish" By John McPhee-a great book on these fish. But it didn't mention the Umpqua run. Are these fish larger than say the Columbia River fish? Any old timers out there with some tackle hints? The shad run was early that spring when George Washingtons toops were starving at Valley Forge. The troops fattened up on shad and then took Philadelphia that summer defeating the Brits(rang the Liberty bell-remember?)
