Stren Extra Strength Mono
In days of old up until now, I have been a Maxima junky. However,I now fish a Chronarch and an Expior EB30 now which have less line capacity than I am used to...especially since I plan to catch the world's largest steelhead (whatever!). I am intrigued by the "extra strength" lines out there which advertise smaller diameters, but larger breaking strength. For example, I think the Stren Extra Strength advertises their 10# line to have the breaking strength of 14# or higher. If these are any good, it would seem to be an ideal answer for the smaller capacity reels.
I know that I have enoughline on both now, but would always like a little wiggle room capacity wise.
I would like to know if anyone has had experience with this line and was it a good or bad experience.
While I await your replys, I'll sharpen a few hooks for that world record

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
Ty,
Are you having good luck with the Perfexion?
I tried it when it first came out and didn't like it. It was quite a bit weaker than "normal" Maxima and kinked up when tying knots with it similar to what I've experienced with Trilene XL. I heard mostly negative reports from others as well at that time.
Maybe they have made some changes since then? That was probably around 2 years ago or so.

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
TY, haven't heard of that type of maxima...is it available at GI or Sportsman's Whse? I guess I probably looked right past it on the shelf. Is it the type of line that advertises smaller diameter with greater breaking strength?
Thanks for the info

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
I have one of my jig reels spooled with perflexion 10#. I haven't experienced any real problems with it (at least yet) I have to admit that I haven't used that reel much though. I did land a 18# fall nook while fishnig for late summers on the siletz this year with it and didn't have any problems. The only thing I don't like about it is the non-floating aspect. I like my bobber (float  ) set-ups with floating line for easier mending.
Yes guitgary, Bi-**rt and G.I Joes have it, as well as Sport**ans Ware***se.

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
Maxima all way for me. I have used stren extra strength and it`s not bad line , but it`s not maxima. I wouldn`t recommend the perfection, that line is garbage. I`ve tried 10# ,12# and then 30# and it all broke easy. I was braking the stuff on hook sets with a med. action rod. The 30# costed me a nice king that didn`t even hardly have the rod bent when it broke. It`s thin and soft and casts great but it`s junk. Maxima UG you can`t go wrong

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
Guitgary --- We have been using the Stren Extra-Strength 10 lb. line for a couple of years in Alaska, mainly for silvers employing smaller capacity high-end reels (Quantum PR-600 and various Shimanos). Good results on perhaps 200 silvers.

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
I like it. I use it when mooching for kings. I use the 10lb diameter, that has 18lb breaking strength.
You may check out Maximas website. I'll bet their line breaks at quite a bit more than the stated strength. Ande is one of the few monos that actually break at the stated strength.
With Maxima,I'll bet the 10lb test actually breaks at closer to 14-15lbs.
I just looked at a website, that showed 10lb Maxima broke at 14lbs,and the 12lb broke at 16lb.Heres a link line test

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
Ichtydemon, maxima lines breaks at a higher line strenght due to the diamater is bigger (line underrated under say 15 # then it is overrated cause the line does have a higher breaking strength.
By the way: Maxima Preflexion is great if you use it for what it is intended. It is not very abration resistant and doesn't streach that much compared to other mono. It was marketed against florocarbon lines, i.e. lower diamter. low memory, and less streach w/ incresed sensitivity.
So, the point is: use it with your float rods, it is recomended to fish it at least at 2#'s over the line rating that u normally fish ultragreen. Don't fish snaggey spots with spinners and way over gun the line rating if you are drift fsihing w/ it.

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
my husband used it and hated it. it tended to knot up a lot more than other lines. he now sticks to trilene big game and is quite happy with it.

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
Stren is all I use, except for leaders. I like Maxima for leaders. I have some of the extra strength 12 pound test stren. I forgot how strong it really said it was, but I haven't had any problems with it. I use eight pound in the summer. I don't like throwing numbers around, but I caught a lot of summer steelhead this year. Did not have a single problem with stren. Not one breakage due to the line. Now my knots...that's a different story.

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
That is what I use also is the 12#. I think it says it breaks at 23-24# I landed a 36# Chinook on the lower Kalama (tide water) and count less slivers on that line. I can't complain at all....Ross

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
I love Stren Extra Strength . I !ve used Stren most of my fishing career.Ididn!t like Maxima becauce the line diametter is understated .If it said it was ten pound it would break at Fourteen pounds . I am currently useing Stren Extra Strengh for bass fishing and pulling bass out of heavy cover , trees , rocks , and where ever else i can find them .It has held up well , and i have abused it while landing bass in these conditions .

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
THANKS VERY MUCH FOR THE INFO.
I spooled up some of the 10# yesterday. I can tell you that, when snagged, the Stren Extra Strength never broke...my leaders (8# maxima) did...which is to be expected. I think I'm going for the 10# on both the Chronarch and Okuma.
THANKS AGAIN, EVERYONE!

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
Give it a few trips and it will start braking before the maxima does. Given a big fish on the end of my line I`d rather have the maxima then the stren any day. But that`s just me.

Re: Stren Extra Strength Mono
I use the Stren Extra Strength for all of my mono now including on my trouat and kokanee rods.
I use the cheep stuff for my droppers though because the stren is so darn hard to break if you get it to heavy.
