Yep! We found three last spring- in one day- on one beach! It was the day after the sewers overflowed in Portland. One of them had an "ephidrine" sticker on it. Those only come from the hospitals . Not sure how something like this gets into our waters. Sure isn't nice when you have kids and dogs at the river and this is what the kids bring you as "cool finds". I like it better when it's lost fishing gear!

Those are not the type of cranksters I like fishing with.

I love fishing with G.G.'s Cranksters as in G.G.s Crank baits.

I use them to inject certain baits with scent. But I sure don't toss them overboard!

Hope the beginning of this story is a prettier picture than what has been assumed.

I say we need not get to worked up over one syringe. It may have been a diabetic,a drug user or someone injecting bait. There are many people that litter up the river banks. A broken bottle can do more damage to your foot or hand then a needle and is more likely.
I know the thought of the needle is a little more frightening because AIDS, however litter is litter and I see a lot more bait containers and bottles then syringes. I can't say I have seen to many people I can identify a Drug users on the river as of late.

TY, were you able to remove this hazardous waste so someone else may not step on it? If not don't you think you maybe could tell us about where it was so we can avoid it or clean it up. This goes way beyond the zipperlip stuff sir. You did not mention what you did about it if anything. Please advise. This thing could even float downriver and impale someones boots.

That needle is FAR more dangerous then a piece of glass. Yes, glass will cut you, but that needle likely has blood in it. That blood, even a miniscule amount, if injected into you, can cause HIV (the virus that causes AIDS), or (this is much more likely) Hepatitis. Hepatitis is an extremely serious liver disease that can be fatal over time (a liver transplant doesn't sound like fun to me). My hope is that no one takes a found syringe lightly.

If one does find a syringe, don't touch it. If you collect it to discard, use tongs or a couple of small sticks. Hold a stick in each hand and pick up the syringe in a giant chopstick fashion. I would put the syringe into an empty soda can, or hard container that will protect from puncture. Take it to your local PD, they have "sharps" and biohazard disposal containers.

Again, that syringe can be deadly. I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but I feel it very important not to underestimate the potential here.

Please, no one be offended by my comments, only meaning to help.

Jerry Nut, your right. Although, getting HIV from a needle like that is probably unlikely, but Hepatitis is a real danger. This is not the kind of para the ******** use, this looks like more of an insulin setup. That needle is very typical of a subcu type of injection. Who knows, maybe an insulin diabetic used it while fishing and than MISTAKINGLY dropped it. Either way, pick it up so some darn kid doesn't find it, just be careful when you do pick it up. I have found lots of them in the S.Santiam just below Lebanon. I just figured it was low-lifes at Grant St. bridge. I still have my fingers crossed that the stuff will kill them quick and stop them from breeding.
