Default New clip for Wilson broodstock

Just wanted to let people know to be on the look out for this year's Wilson broodstock fish. We have been catching a number of them already this winter. In the past we have clipped the Wilson broodstock fish with an Adipose and left vent clip( I can post a picture of this if people don't know what I am talking about). The 3+ year old broodstock will still return with this clip. It should be the clip for broodstock steelhead larger than 10 pounds. But the 2 year old fish(5-9 pounds) will return with a Ad and left max clip. Shown below

Below is what a steelhead's Maxilary fin looks like that was not clipped.

In the future we will clip the broodstock fish with just an ad clip and change the Alsea strain to have an ad and left max clip. We are doing this to have as little impact as possible on the broodstock fish. It may get confusing for a couple years, but hopefully it is for the better.

Scott, do they use clips for stray figures? Seems they couldn't do this accurately clipping two relatively close rivers (Wilson, Siletz) the same way...

Scott, I think they are doing this for the Sandy broodstock program too! I caught several earlier in the year with the right max cut. Or was it the left? Anyways, come to think of it we also caught a few at Herman cr. this summer and those looked like the big "B" run Idaho fish. So many strains so little time!!!

I understand they're clipping the right max on the alsea fish.

The Alsea fish that are dumped in the Wilson and Nestucca have always been clipped with just ad clip. but starting with the release of 2002 (which should return next year) they will be marked ad left max. I am not sure how the new broodstock fish on the Alsea are going to be clipped.

Joe, I don't think the ODFW is too concerned with stray rates in between rivers. I think they are using different clips to compare returns between the broodstock fish and the Alsea strain.
