Default High Vis Tuff Line - spook steelies?

I pondered picking up some 20# high visibility tuff line today. Currently have 10lb mono on my rig. Like the idea of seeing my line a little more in the water to see if I have a belly or what not.

Will the high vis yellow line spook the fish at all?

Age old question about color and fish vision...and I'm not going to pretend to know the right answer! I use the Tuf Line Xp in the greenish brown color, but for visibility reasons, I use a bobber stop with a small but bright tuft of yarn inside it(make sure is it large enough to see easily, but small enough not to interfere with your guides when casting) cinched down far enough up my mainline that I can hold it above the water surface while drifting. Have had many comments about how easy it was to 'watch' what my rigs are doing under water. Good Luck...

I use XP yellow 6/20 and incorporate some 12# fluoro leader via double uni-knots; not for any preceived visibility issues but rather for better abrasion resistance and to maintain the length and life of the XP itself.

You know it really depends on how you are using it. I use it on all of my plug rods and it doesnt spook them at all no matter how clear the water. They dont see it, all they see is the plug. I would say you are ok using it for drift gear but I would stick to dark braid as opposed to hi-vis. On a bobberset up you would be fine no matter what the conditions. If they are seeing your maniline B4 the bait/jig you are fishing it incorrectly.

Scott Amerman and I both use Hi-vis line year round for Steelhead including the lowest clearest water possible.

We both think that it makes no difference and it sure is nice to be able to see your line.

Stinky, I wouldn't worry about the color. If using a bright color line helps you to see while you are fishing, it will make you a better fisherman.

I use hi-vis Sufix in yellow in all conditions and I am very happy with it. Grant

Think I'll pick up some 20# high vis tomorrow.

Gonna pick up some bubble gum colored worms as well. Give them a whirl next time I get my line wet.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Nope

I agree with Grant
I use high-vis on everything including drift rods and have had no problems hooking fish!

If you think it does, take a black sharpie and color the bottom 6' or so... just a thought!|

I don't have any problem hooking fish with high vis line either, no matter how clear the water is.

And if you feel better about it do what TH said, get a black pen.

You might want to use mono instead of braid for drift fishing, it fishes better.

Another thing, I found the higher the modulus the graphite the better you can feel and seeing isn't as important as feeling.

For steelhead I like Ande and Sufix for a spinning reel and for a casting reel I like Maxima UG. For plugs I like 50# Power Pro w/ a 20# mono leader, no matter how clear it is.

Max UG for all leaders.

I attach a 7-8 foot section of 20 lb mono after the 20 lb Fireline using a surgeons knot. It runs through the guides with no problem, gives me a little stretch and I change it every trip. Casts like a "shooting head".
Took the idea from an STS article this fall.
