Handicap fishing reels

I am in need of some pointers from the ifish community regarding special use fishing reels. Today one of my nephews lost 4 fingers in an accident. Can you give me some ideas on how others still fish without fingers on one hand? I am looking for pointers on specific equipment others have used and want to get him going forward in life again.

They make electric crank reels. I have a friend who has an uncle with one arm. He is a fishin fool. Takes his boat down to Hammond for a month every year for the B-10 fishery. Catches more than his fair share of fish too.

If he is a bank fisherman, I bet someone could come up with a prosthetic device of some sort. You know those shoes the bicycle riders wear that connect to a peg on the peddle. Maybe someone could devise a glove that had a recepticle that would fit a modified handle. I am sure the answer is out there.

You might give Ollie Damons a call. They may have some ideas.

I dont know if its an option but I know of a couple guys that are missing fingers on thier reel hands and they just use their palms to grip the handle. They seem do just fine. I have also seen velcro grips <cant remember where> but they were used to hold the anglers hand to the reel handle also. I bet something like that would be easy to make.

Thanks for the pointers. This board has an abundance of creative talent. The pursuit of fish must inspire creativity in addition to school. Or for some, in spite of school ;-)

I lost my right thomb a few years back. I have a word for everyone, It was very dishearting at first. The love of fishing is what will help us adjust and be able to enjoy the time spent. I don't mean to sound pollyanna hear, just a word of incouragement.

If a person really wants to fish, they will figure out a way. I watched a woman flyfisher on the Metolius some years ago and she had lost her left arm above the elbow. She outfished everybody there that day. Amazing!
