Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
Buy a really nice drift fishing rod put the tip (top 6" or so) in your power window, roll up window breaking rod. Cut broken end off and glue new top guide on. Repeat as necessary till you have desired stiffness. Instant custom backbouncing rod!

Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
I've been using GL932C's for 5 or 6 years now. They have a very sensitive tip so they double as sturgeon rods, especially in the estuary.

Have TH Rods make you one or he just may have one on sale already.
Or look up BOE and Trask river tackle.

Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
For the budget minded the Berkley IM-7, 7 foot 9 inch 15 to 50 makes an excellent back bouncing rod as well as a great diver rod in the ocean. It's like a Timex watch, it takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Hey Pete, what website did you use to view their ad and can you view it weekly? I was going to bookmark this but I'm sure it would take me back to this ad only.
We never have to leave our computers to find the deals now. Thanks!

Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
The Loomis GL2 BBR964 is a good heavy back bouncer. If you are going to be running lighter lead (8 to 2 oz) more often go with a HSR983 or HSR932. Why go with a disposable rod? We've landed litterally hundreds of salmon on each rod and they still go strong. Even landed a couple over size sturgeon on the HSR 983's.

Because I really have not found a bettr rod for the job yet. David has spoken... I am going to chech his suggestion out. Is the HRS a one piece rod?
Sorry for jumping in this thread, we all are looking rod the perfect rod, Thats part of the fun.

Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
All the Loomis HSR and BBR rods are one piece.
If those other rods were better I would save my money and buy them.

Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
The 983 is one of my all around favorites for back bouncing as well as Kwikfish. It works good for trolling too. It may be a little more that $200 though.
Of course if you are only going to go out a few times a year you might go with one of the others.

Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
I think there are two big reasons to consider going with the Northrivers.
First is initial price. Many of the Ifishers I have met are not financially able or interested in laying out hundreds of dollars for a rod. Especially for a backbouncer. There may not be a need for a fancy, expensive rod for this application. Most of the time it will probably be used for trolling.
Second is the warrantee. You break it. They replace it with any rod of comparable price --- no charge. Period. Amen.
Pretty hard to beat.

Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
You go Jack. If you can go Loomis, go Loomis. If you can't, there are other alternatives. I've got an old $19.99 Starlite that has caught just as many fish.
The 17-40 BBR Allstar I bought last year is the same blank as my Loomis, with a better, larger cork above the reel seat, and nicer eye wraps. I don't work for them, just stating my results and observations.
Most important, buy what you like.

Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
I bought a North by Northwest at GI Joes last fall for about 70 bucks. It has thus far worked well, seems well made, and the components seem good. It's 7' 9", rated for 15 to 40 lb line. They had a lighter model as well, if I recall. I got this one for chinook. It would be pretty heavy for steelhead.

Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
for $200 you can get a heck of a BB rod!
Rogue has a few very nice blanks out there right now that I would compare to almost anything!
Shop around and don't spend retail ....
Shoot me an email if you'd like a quote or two!

Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
Silver Hilton, I bought one of those rods last Saturday, the 15-40 and broke it the first day outlast Sunday. GiJoe's took it back no question... Good for them. They said the break was interesting, perfectly squarely snapped almost like it was cut. It broke just where the rod meets the cork. I was Surgeon fishing at Bonneville doing a little C and R. We were using 6 oz. I landed the first fish about 15" and I felt a creak in the handle and the next hookset.... Snap. It was a 41 fish day so it was not a total loss.
When using a new rod for the first time I always bring a extra rod... good thing. Like some of you I am just looking for the perfect rod. DJ might have the answer, I need to find a buddy with one and give it a try before I shell out the coin.
DJ, are you selling off any guide rods?

Re: I need a backbouncing rod (help)
I picked up a G-Loomis BBR 966-C Mag/Hvy 8' last summer and really like it for BBing.
I've bounced from 3 to 14 oz's with it. I wanted a heavy 1 piece bouncer. It doesn't have a lot of "tip" but has great feel. I don't really see the tip do much during those sensitive chews but I can feel it through the rod.
I kind of like the 8' length for hooksets and angling a fish.
It'll bend the neck on a 50# chinook too. DJ even landed a fish on it I think
