Default How to put a corkie on

I have been fishing with two #10 or #12 pink corkies. I have been just putting them just above my hook. Should I be using a toothpick or something else to stop my corkies from sliding? Or do they really even slide that much?

I never have used anything other than the method you describe. Some people do use a toothpick, but to me it is just something else to carry and loose.

FFM,
I have caught hundreds of steelhead and never toothpicked my corkies etc. The most important things to consider while drift fishing are proper corkie size vs.hook size and weight of slinkie/pencil lead vs. water current speed. Hope this helps!

IF you're using enough weight the corkie will seat against the hook anyways. I usually smear a bit of smelly jelly on the inside top of the corkie which helps keep it where you want it. Probably not necessary, but cant hurt. Only messed with toothpicks a couple of times before tossing them.

If you're fishing in water that has current, the current should be enough to press the corkie against the hook. However, if you're plunking in very slow water what will happen is your weight will rest on the bottom and so will your hook and bait. Your corkie will then slide up your line to the highest point it can. You could then end up lining/flossing a fish. Toothpicks would help this situation.

May I suggest a small bead between your hook and the corkie. Everyone else has pretty much covered the correct way to attach a corkie. Everyone has their own system, what is comfortable for you is ok!

I switched a few years ago to a cool way to keep my corkie and hook together.
Cut a 6" chunk of leader and make a Bight in the line.
thread the Bight through the hole of the corkie at the running end of the main line to the bottom of the corkie. (where the hook will be). Cut some yarn and thread it through the leader.
At the top of corkie pull on BOTH ends of the leader until you see the yarn at the top of said corkie.
Pull out the leader by pulling on one end and the yarn is now left in corkie with the tag ends surrounding the hook.
It sounds complicated but it isn't. It keeps your corkie in one place and if you thread shimp onto your line like me it help keep it in one place. Near the hook.
Sorry no pictures.
I like it but I don't know that it works any better.
But you do look cool to your friends/clients.
