Northern Pikeminnow Baits?

With the pay fishery to begin May 5th, What are some of your favorite Baits, Plugs, Lures etc.

I prefer Salmon liver pieces or the spine blood both sprinkled with salt or sugar. It helps to toughen the bait for rigging and produces very well. It helps to V cut the blood vein and remove whole then dice prior to salt or sugar.

Souds like an interesting trick. I'll have to try the salting/sugaring.

My favorite bait is anything the peamouths won't eat (yea right)

Liver works the best for me. I heard a kid near the Portco launch did well with corn (not sure what brand).

I would like to find some red wiggler (composting) worms to use. All I can find are huge nightcrawlers.

I'm also going to experiment with plugs. I catch several every springer season on sardine wraped kwickfish. A guy at Bob's swears he uses bass plugs and catches a lot too.

He is a pro! Although not on purpose.

Seriously though, in the Yamhill they just pound a panther martin spinner, they will even come back if you miss the first time. We go trout fishing and end up having more fun with the pikeminnow on small trout rods, the biggest one was about four pounds!

I found last year that they would take sardine pieces quite well. When I was a kid, would catch a bunch on corn. I have also caught some grampas on walleye plugs.

Hey ChuckDog,

I've heard that before. Any pointers on size or style? I looked at the Rat-L-Traps at GIJoes and had no clue (since I'd never noticed them before). The guy at the counter thought I was an idiot for asking his opinion on the best one for *********.

I'll look at the Husky-jerks too.

Guy at Bob's suggested wee warts in black or blue and gold, Rat-L-Traps, and small brad's wigglers.

For banking I use a 2oz. teardrop 20 inches below threeway swivel and a #2 or smaller Octopus hook on a 3" leader all on 10lb mono. If you have no bites in first 15 minutes then move to another location. eddy's, piling's, rip rap, all are great locations and are best caught during slack highs and lows.

Dang 1Pump. You are a dedicated man. I caught 3 about a week ago and I was considering tethering them up somewhere so I could come back and get it once the season started. Considering how that'd be illegal and something probably would've eaten them by then anyway I didn't.

well not only is the squaw fish season coming into range but also shad is around the corner and that also means the big gaters will be there to , so what i like to do is start the day , evening , morning , fishing for squaws and if there really hiting ill stick with what makes me $ if not then ill turn to shad catch a few then get ready for the big ones catch enough to get sore arms , back , stomack , etc. ooohhh what a day of fishing , so lets have some fun and be safe.

Blue/Chrome Rattle-n-Rap (Rapalas' version of the rattle trap) in 3/8 oz. size. Also white or chrome sparkle 3" grubs on a 1/8 -1/4 oz. head. Anything that looks like a salmon smolt. Keep moving 'till you find fish.

Good luck and watch out for those pesky smallmouth!!

Thanks guys, I'll give that a shot. I sure like the idea of pitching lures and not having to deal with the bait stealing fish as much. Plus I get tired of my chips tasting like raw chicken liver. :shocked:

Try backtrolling a floating Rapala minnow, two treble size, off a 4 ft leader, three way swivel and ball lead on a breakaway strength dropper. .If you do't get into sqauws, you'll at least hit smallmouth and walleye.
