Drift Boat bottom coatings
Have any of you ever had one of the flexible pick-up bed linings applied to your aluminum drift boat? You know, Rhino or Tuff-Ass kind of stuff, flexible and waterproof.
It looks like a good use for some of the coatings, if you can believe the advertising.
I Would like to ehar from anyone who has had soe experience with this kind of stuff.

Re: Drift Boat bottom coatings
I just bought a '98 drift boat that had the Rhino liner sprayed on it from the factory, so I am told, (Alumaweld) and it's coming off in big chunks. I'd also like to hear about other products. I think I read a while back about Glovit or Coatit???

Re: Drift Boat bottom coatings
I had Rino liner on my old sled. On the inside it was great. made the boat quiter, on the floor it was very durable.
On the outside bottom, NEVER again. When I pulled up on the beach. That is where it wanted to stay. That stuff sticks to rocks like glue. Glad I did not put in on my db.

Re: Drift Boat bottom coatings
about a year ago I had a DB and was looking into Rhino for the bottom. Spoke to the guy at Rhino in Salem, he said it makes a life time surface. Said that if you use the "orange peel" type texture it creates a type of surface that allows the boat to slide off rocks with no resistance. BUT, once it's on it's on so I never took the plunge. Sold the DB and have a Sled... MORE POWER! I still think the concept is good but not sure if I would try it with my own boat, without seeing it work in first person, if you know what I mean, let someone else do it first!
Good Luck!!

Re: Drift Boat bottom coatings
Swim Shady,
The guy told you that the textured stuff would help it slide off of rocks? That's really stupid since they tell everybody that's looking to put it in the bed of a truck that the texture will keep things from sliding around...as in, it 'grabs' onto them. Rhino, or any other 'lining' system for that matter, is not a good application for the outside of a boat.
Coat-it or Gluvit are what you are looking for, and they're available at most marine supply dealers....

Re: Drift Boat bottom coatings
onstep - is UHMW a sheet product or is it a liquid ? In the past I have had Gluvit and Slip-it, or whatever. Got a couple of years out of it and then any place it was scratched it held water and corrosion started and little scratches became big and then off in sheats and now only little patches and pieces are left.
What is proper preparation on a "seasoned" boat.

Re: Drift Boat bottom coatings
If you still have the gluv it on there it is a good idea to take the rest of it off before starting over. I have used it a couple of times on my boat and it is now coming off again. I think I will try coat it this go round. I have also heard that if the coat it wears out you dont have to strip it all the way down to replace it. You might want to check with an automotive paint supply store for something to clean and etch the surface before re-applying a new coat of the epoxy type material. As far as coat it goes I am not sure how to prep the surface for good adheasion.

Re: Drift Boat bottom coatings
had linex put on my drift boat. had it for 4 years before I sold it. It was the best thing I did for that boat. no more sticking on the rocks lots quiter. in real low water you can slide on the rocks. I whould put it on my next drift boat.
