kicker?
I have a few questions about kickers. i have an alaskan smokercraft 15ft. I fish the columbia mostly. What size motor should I get or who should I contact that is going to be able to help. Any info would be great. Happy Holiday's

Re: kicker?
depends on 4-stroke or 2-stroke. A 4-stroke will run better at lower rpm's and run cleaner. For you boat, under most conditions a 6hp would be pretty ideal. Sometimes the added hp is nice in the lower river if the tide is really running and you loose power from the main motor. if you don;t think this is an issue and you just want to troll, and often very slow like for kokanee, then you might even go to a 4hp.
I'm getting a 7.5hp 4-stroke for my 19' smokercraft.
good luck,
GBS

Re: kicker?
if this is the only motor, I have two friends that troll with a 25hp. if it was just a troller I would go with 6h.p.

Re: kicker?
Well, i have a 25 johnson that trolls a little to fast for somethings. Also I want the added security when I am down in the bays or the coastal rivers. One other thing is that the motor i have is electric start. If my battery goes then I have no way to start the motor. If I have a kicker I am covered. Thanks for all the info so far.

Re: kicker?
I have a 6hp, 4 stroke Yamaha on my 18' Alumaweld and it is has plenty of power to troll. I would think 6hp would be the most you would want.

Re: kicker?
Brad,
I plan on selling it as a package with the boat. If whoever buys the boat doesn't want it, I'll let you know.
It is a great little motor though. If you decide on a Yamaha, go see Dave at North River on Hwy 212. He's a good guy.

Re: kicker?
I have a 25 Merc pump on my 14' Crestliner and a 6hp Yamaha I've had for 10 years. The combo works great for me. Good luck.

Re: kicker?
Cartman, Do you remember being anchored next to me when i had my 14ft Klamath?? I have a 15hp on that...trolls great...and moves me pretty good...if you go Honda..get the 9.9, it's the same motor as the 15 but jetted different..trolls wonderful...It would be a great backup if the 25 gave you trouble. Great luck ! See ya in the spring??

Re: kicker?
a 8 hp yamaha 4 stroke is the perfect trolling motor has a charging system you can get it with a auto tilt if you want its the smallest and lightest of the big three

Re: kicker?
trolling motor I would say anywhere between 4 and 6 hp if you are going to just use one motor a 15 hp merc would work fine and would troll ok on the Columbia.

Re: kicker?
I have a 25 hp yamaha 2 stroke on my 12 foot zodiac. It trolls way to fast so I added a trolling plate that I can let down for trolling and pull up when making a run to another spot. It is nice to have the extra power and not take all day to get to where I want to fish. My boat is actually rated for up to 35 hp . I didnt want the extra weight besides it is scary with the 25 at full throtle.

If you have a fifteen foot smokercraft alaskan, the short shaft will be your better choice. I believe that boat has a pretty shallow transom.

One more thing, glad to here your going with a Merc. Your helping to support American Jobs. Plus there great little trolling motors.

Re: kicker?
I had a 15 ft. lodge and used a 2 stroke 5 horse Merc. with integrated tank. Lightwieght and no fuss with an extra tank. Worked well trolling. I now use it on my N.R. Revenge, still has the umph to troll well, despite alot of extra weight.
