Default Columbia River Crabbing

I put 18 crab pots in two strings on the lower desdemona sands yesterday. We baited with tuna heads and shad, no bait cans this time. With everything wrong in the river, lots of run off, muddy water, times to harvest are wrong, before daylite or after dark But we needed Christmas Crab so I fire up the Lady Dee at 7am this morning (Saturday). We had to run the first few pots in the dark, thanks to Nobeltec I could find them in the dark. We had the gear on board by 9am with 12 limits of 12 crab for everybody on board. We cooked them in 2 cooks and everyone is on the road before 11am. We harvested everything we need for the holidays. You have a few days to fish before the commercials go in. Be safe out there and use common sense on the water, it can be nasty out there.
Thanks Capt. E.R. (Gene) Kane Happy Holidays

Question Re: Columbia River Crabbing

How fast will the commercials clean it out? I want to go on Saturday so we can do this in the daylight. Weather looks OK too, but taking some folks and kids with me, don't want to go if it will suck. Any advice?

OK...I'm a newbie yes, just did the research and see that they will pre-soak stating this morning. Can I still expect to pull a few of these guys in tomorrow if I'm out off Hammond?

Thanks

You will still get lots of crab just not as many of the real big ones.
In my opinion it will still be a fun and productive trip. Just watch the forecast as it might be rough.
Good luck!!!

Sunday looks to be the best conditions 8' swell, Saturday 13' swell. I think Illwaco will be the most effected by the commercials as that is where the bulk of the river fleet will focus their pots. Hammond would be a safer bet. Once the commercials have run their string its hard to pull crab away from that sent trail. The crab that come in with the tide that get up river past them you have a fair shot at

Anybody go out of Hammond today and have a condition report ?

Was thinking of trying tomorrow and was wondering if the 10mph E wind made the incoming sloppy. Thanks
