Default glovit problem

I coated my new drift boat bottom about two years ago with a gallon of glovit. Problem is that the glovit appears to be lifting up in spots now. I noticed spots where the glovit appears to have scraped off along the bottom. I wouldnt think much of this except upon further inspection I can see spots where it appears the glovit is not adhering to the bottom of the boat and there is a air pocket between the glovit and the aluminum. I prepd the surface before applying the glovit. Why is it doing this. I had glovit on my previous driftboat and never had to reapply in the 6 yrs I had the boat. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Sounds like there might have been some oil on the metal before the gluvit got glopped on.

So long as it aint breaking off, I can't say I would mess with it.

Dear friend:
I was told a few years ago not to put too thick of a coating on the bottom. The thicker it is the less flexible it is. Just think about the flexing everytime you slide over a rock. A gallon is alot of product. I use two quarts of Coat It when I apply it to the bottom of a new boat.

Adhesion to aluminum is always a problem. There was probably some kind of finish on it already?

Yeah, don't sweat it until the chunks start coming off.

I have done a ton of gluvit jobs. Probably just did not get scuffed well enough or may have been oil present even when sanding. Good news though! Turn the boat over and use 40 grit sandpaper-even into the stuff already applied. Re-apply more! Should not have any more probs, unless it shows up in another place. Not going to make that much difference anyway Good fishen'

I never did scuff the aluminum before applying the glovit. I did use some solvent called prepsol that is supposed to remove oils and waxes. The aluminum surface should have been pretty clean. So if I scuff the bottom surface of the aluminum that should be enough?

Yep! Clean is not always the answer with aluminum. If not using an etching primer it needs to be roughed up pretty good then wiped down.(Vinegar works well also for wiping down- just dry off, and roll on Gluvit.) Merry Christmas
