Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
I've been inside waaay too long. I was thinking today about all the tackle shops in the area(that I know of) and how the area is pretty well covered. Then I started thinking of places that I go too that I wish had a shop or at least a better one. The only one that comes to mind is the Fishery. I have been frustrated several times there because their bait selection sucks and it's over-priced. Not to mention I don't think they open early enough. I wish there was something between here and there that had a good selection, was fair priced, and opened early. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the Fishery, I like those people and think they do a good job. I just wished they offered a little more. Besides, like I said I'm bored and my mind is wandering aimlessly. Anyone have any input? Any place you wish there was a shop or any existing shops you wish were improved? Just for fun, no bashing  .

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
WE definitly need a quality sporting Goods store ie. Fishing tackle shop on the west side of town. This store should be staffed with knowledgeable people.
The only option for mr is GI Joes Not. They usually dont have what I am looking and their clerks are not very knowledgeable on local fishing.
The only other option is to spend at least 40 minutes in heavy traffic to drive either to Fisherman's in O.C. or Delta Park

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
Beaverton/Hillsboro... there aint much out here... I think Sportsman's Warehouse blew it by not locating their store on the West side. If they did they would have tied up the market out here instead of sharing the market with two FM stores.

Another vote for the west side. Joes does a decent job for the type of store they are. I would like to see a FMS out on our end of town. Between the two, I think we would be covered.

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
Remember when there were tackle shops in every community. Wonder what ever happen to small businesss like that. Could it be we stopped supporting them.
5-Cents Larry's Sports Center used to have a store in the Cedar Hills shopping center... he couldn't get enough clientel to keep the store open for more then a couple years. Maybe Sportsman's Warehouse did more homework then you think

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
Sportsmans wherehouse is in a great location. Almost everyone in the portland metro area is in the 82nd area atleast every so often. Especially the husband that goes there while his wife goes to the mall, or makes her go there after the mall. They are not too far away from N portland and vancouver, and they are not too far away from the southern metro area. Being in the middle get you more business then being at an extreme if you have prices worth going for.

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
there is just nothing but joes in the hillsboro area. they have a decent selection, but after you've seen it, you've seen it. the bait selection is limited and if you're after amermans eggs, well, one store keeps them in the breakroom as they are not allowed to keep them in the cooler (cooler owned by another bait distributor). if you don't ask, you'd think they don't have them.

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
I'm happy as long as they don't put one in Scappoose or St Helens. Since all we have is Fred Meyer and WalMart, I don't spend much money unless I have free time in Portland. If someone opened a good shop out here, or if Brown's Landing expanded their selection, I'd be broke all of the time!

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
The problem with the Cedar Hills Larry's was the location. I think there has only been a couple places in that mall that have lasted more than a few years. Antbody remember the old wigwam stores? Those were all over

Ollie Damon's is a good bet if you don't mind SE portland. The staff is very knowledgeable. Ah however, they are not open before 9. Great selection of bait though.

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
Larry couldnt make Cedar Hills work, :depressed: but I think the population has slightly grown on that side of town in the last 10 years
In the late 80's Tannasborne Mall sat in a field all alone. 185th was almost a cow trail compared to what it is now.
A good store could easily make it that side of town now.

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
I'll second McMinnville. Only have Bi-Mart which isn't too bad, Walmart and Big5 which are both a joke. There used to be a really great little shop with a very knowledgeable owner, but he passed away a few years back.

Foxer
Wigwam used to be located on Canyon Rd where the Laser Tag is now. I used to love going in that place with my dad. I found a package of hooks in an old tackle box I bought at a garage sale awhile back with a wigwam tag on it.

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
I agree with the west side, more out toward Hillsboro. A good Sportsman's Warehouse would be nice. GI Joes has some stuff but I get frustrated when I go in there and things I want are not there and the clerk is too busy talking to his young buddy about their love life and is not able to help you. Some of the older clerks are better but they are not always around.
Come on Sportsman's Warehouse. Get busy and move west.

Fortunatly my office is in Clackamas so I can get what I need from Great American Tackle in Clackamas. One of the remaining true neighborhood tackle stores. The owner Gary Waterhouse is very knowledgeable.

I've often considered buying one of the houses next to the boat ramp in Jefferson and opening up a tackle store, bait shop, shuttle service, guide service, and even have some boats for sale.

I think Fishermans should open a store in the field next to the Mini Mart in Columbia City. My wife wouldn't like it tho

Sharing the same parking lot that Home Depot and Lowe's already share on TV Highway in Hillsboro. My wife and daughter could drop me off and go shopping for hours and I would be happy.

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
There is a big difference between a tackle store and a mega-sports store(ie GI Joes). And still further a difference between Fishermans Marine and Gi Joes. Remember these big stores don't have a niche-they share niches. The small tackle store has a small niche in the market place, has a limited customer base and therefore has to be small to keep overhead costs to a minimum.
With that in mind I still feel as "foxer" Larry's problem was location that is a great location for the Cedar Hills neighborhood but not easily accessed from the freeways.
But for anyone wanting to head out from the Portland metro area to the coastal rivers for the day would'nt a place to buy fresh shrimp, lures, bait, licenses, ect. be great? Somewhere between the 217/26 interchange and the 26/6 Fork. Some place wih easy on-easy off access. Like 185th.

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
You guys are kidding me I live in Lebanon, and we have Wal-mart and if I wanted to fish for Bass I would be set, Bi-mart is better but it seems I'm half way to the coast when I find out were out of something, I hit Harry's and hope for the best, South Beach isn't bad but basically if you can't make your own sometimes you have to do without, we carry a fair amount of stuff on the boat and I have had to make a spinner on the way. I guess thats why they call it fishing not catching. You have to do with what you have and hope your being a good boy scout and your prepared. Ray

I've gotta chime in with those who said "McMinnville" and sure miss the store. I spent a number of years there after helping to open it in the 70's.

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
for my money something on the westside between beaverton and hillsboro would be good.....joes works but they dont open early enough.....and quite often have run out of stuff i want....
i happen to disagree with the thought that the OC stores are appropriately located......i have to make "special" trips to get anything from those stores except during april when i fish down there.....for me OC is 35 miles.....kinda out of the way.....

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
I`d like to see a good tackle store in the Newport area. It would be nice to have a place that just had salmon and steelhead gear and some ocean fishing gear( like Nestacca valley sporting goods) All we have is Englund marine and they have to much comm. gear and their prices are high. :depressed: The other place`s suck. Every time I want something I can`t find it. It`s really bad when I got to go to the valley or up to Hebo to buy fishing gear for steelhead!!

Re: Where do you wish there was a tackle shop?
We idiots in McMinnville really do miss Mike and Bill since Fishing Unlimited closed after Bill's passing. Though some decent info and tackle can be had at Bi-Mart, there's always the problem about limited stock. With so many people talking about Hi-way 26/6 you'd think that only the gamblers take 18 anymore.
The new Albertson's mall area as well as the Lowe's facility make the southern Mac area a natural for such a place... easy access on/off 18 and plenty of parking. Who knows, maybe a small shop by Subway? (Roth's Parking lot)
