Loon Lake
While growing up, my folks used to take me to Loon Lake (near Reedsport) every summer. We used to catch bluegill, smallies and trout when we were not water skiing. I'm curious about how it fishes now. Anyone fish much on this lake? Is Duckett's Lodge still there?
Thanks,
ORS

Re: Loon Lake
Loon Lake is one of the most mysterious lakes in Oregon for Me. When I was a kid we campmed there every year. I thinks its currently most a bass fishing show now. I caught Blue Gill, bull head ,small mouth bass and yellow perch. The water was rumored to be very deep when I was a kid, since it was so dark and high in the coast range, but I think its only 200-300 feet at the most.

Re: Loon Lake
Excerpted from Atlas of Oregon Lakes, OSU Press, Undated (I bought mine in the mid-1980s):
Quote:
|
Loon Lake sits in beautiful surroundings in the Coast Range east of Reedsport and is a classic example of a landslide lake. Great blocks of sandstone fell from the west wall of the Lake Creek valley to lie as a jumbled mass of blocks that impounded the waters of Lake Creek. Carbon-14 dating of trees drowned at the time of damming indicate that the event occurred about 1460 years ago.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">If you go there, stand on the bridge spanning the outfall just below the lake's outlet and look over the railing on the downstream side...if that doesn't give you vertigo, nothing will .
The Atlas says Loon Lake has a maximum depth of 105 feet (53' average), covers 294 acres, and has very high water quality.
When I lived in the area years ago it was mainly used as a water ski lake...with some fishing for bass, bluegill, etc. I think that is still the case.

Re: Loon Lake
I remember slaying the bluegill when I was a kid...i'd be out in the row boat with my fly rod chuckin skeeter patterns. There were also very large trout at the inlet - near the BLM park. I've often thought about going back - maybe this summer.

Re: Loon Lake
My father-in-law just loves a book he got, I think it is called "Loon Lake Lloyd". It regales the reader with tales of logging, camping, fishing, etc. mostly from the '50's, I think. I haven't yet read the book. It looks more "local" than "literature", but might still be a fun read.

Re: Loon Lake
Gutshot, that is more great info! Reedsport is also one of that last areas on the coast that remains affordable for a second home, since International paper pulled out few years back, the job market has been very depressed. But now its even better without the smell.

Re: Loon Lake
If you haven't been there for several years, get ready for a shock. It used to be fairly unsettled. Now it is very "developed".
