I'll always be thankful to Len. When I was 18 year old kid just starting out on Tillamook Bay in a 14 ft car topper I wasn't having much success pulling spinners at the Oyster House.
I was headed home and stopped at the old Safeway in town and parked next to Len. We struck up a conversation and he proceeded to give me a personal salmon seminar in the parking lot giving me the basics of how to get it done. I thanked him and we went our separate ways. It wasn't until I got home that I found four of his spinners in my boat that he had tossed in before we had parted ways at Safeway.

RIP - I hope they are all 40 pounders in heaven.

Len was a fantastic guy and superb fisherman. He was always willing to offer advice to anyone who asked politely.

About 10 years ago, I screwed up and cut him off in a troll lane. To make matters worse, I tangled up three of his boats lines. Fearing the wrath of a ticked off guide, I began to apologize profusely. He just smiled and said "lesson learned" as he went about working on the tangle.

I thought that was very very cool.

I had not heard about this. Len and I were buddies in High School, played football together and I fished with him once or twice. Several times, at the Sportsman's Show, I would stop-by his booth to say hi but, he was always so busy with other folks, I would eventually just walk-on - - - 'opportunities lost - - - 'sad. Rest in peace, my friend. Don

I first met Len working as Electricians on a Tektronics project in the early 70s. We hit it off and started showing each other our favorite holes on the Trask and Wilson. One day He bought a Lavro driftboat and told me He had decided to get His guide license and quit the electrical trade. He put a trailer down on the Wilson trailer park and started to guide Chinooks and slaughtered them that year by the Rock across the river. He went on to be a very accomplished guide, doing shows on Fishing The West with Larry and eventually mastering the whole coastal fishery, as well as the Willamette. He will be greatly missed by the fishing industry and also very much by Me!!!

RIP Big Guy

Len was a great man! Even to the "new blood' on the river he was most helpful. I really enjoyed sitting on the bench at Tackle Time in the early mornings, with him, and talking tides and finishing our coffee before clients started showing up. Always a gentleman!

I made the mistake one day fishing next to him at B-10. We both had full boats of clients. I was working hard at it to scratch out a fish and my clients would say to me "Look! he's got another one" . Len was done by 10am and I think I came in around 4pm.

God bless you Len and THANK YOU for all your kindness and help.
We'll keep you in our prayers Terry
Sincerely
Pete Grace

I met Len way back in the late 70s. Bumped into him on the Trask fishing Steel Head. We were bank fishing the stretch from the Rock Hole up to Lorens Drift. We talked and fished all the way along that stretch. When I bumped into him he had already been fishing for about an hour. We both caught fish, won't say how many back in those days. Walking back down river to our trucks Len stopped a few times to pick up things he had hid in the brush. Now don't ask me what those things were, like I said, back in those day. We stayed friends ever since and learned years ago not fish like we did, in those day. Rest in peace my friend.

I love Len and Terry. I just wished I could have given Len one last big hug. I'll just save it for Terry.
Terry deserves our love, prayers and thoughts. She is such a great gal and she supported Len and made it possible for Len to give his all to our fisheries and to the fishermen and women. Behind every great guide is a great partner. I can't figure out who was the better half with those two! They are both awesome!

There is a hole in my heart where Len was. I always admired him. I got so excited when I saw him at the docks or anywhere there was anything fishy going on. I'm going to miss seeing Terry and Len working there way through the crowds at the sportsman show. When they saw me and when I saw them, big smiles met.

I'm just going to miss them together so much.

Many thanks to Terry for taking such good care of him.

Len was always fun to meet on river. He always said Hello . I would see him lower Wilson and Trask and ask him if that one was "Table Fair ?". He chuckle and then explain to his clients it was from Fishing West episode. I would always catch his seminars at sportsman shows. He was wealth of fishing info and enjoyed sharing.

Hope Terry is holding up ok . My prayers and best wishes to family. Len will be missed.

RIP Len. He didn't know me from Adam, but when I walked up to him a few years ago at Campers West one afternoon, we talked like old fishin' buddies. He'd always give it you straight when you asked him,"how's fishin'?" With Len, it was usually GOOD!!!!!

My prayers to his wife & family.

Wow, this is sad news! I've known Len for almost 30 years. Not well but Len was one of those guys who was a friend to everyone he knew.

When the fish were in at Tillamook Len was there, or was it the other way around?

Way too many of the old guys passing on. Rest in peace Len.

Our prayers go out to Terry.

Made my day just to see his phone number come up on my phone...didn't matter if it was Len or Terry, dearly love both of them.

So glad I fished with him in August.

He reached out to my wife and I when he saw we were having trouble putting a fish in the boat years ago. He didn't need to, but that was Len. Spent a day with him and they turned out to be great friends. So many good times.

Such damn good people.

Tight lines dear friend. Terry, big hugs to you.

Len helped so many people make special memories. Mine was 55 pounds, at the mouth of the Trask, on a red and white blade.

Len was one of my closest friends. You are missed my friend.

One of the true ambassadors of the sport. A soft-spoken gentleman with a smile, a kind word, and a friendly wave for every boat trolling by.

First heard of him from the FTW episode he did on bobber fishin' and pluggin' the Wilson with host Jeff Boyer. Gonna have to cue that one up on the VCR (yes, I still have one!) in his memory.

They broke the mold when they made Len. Introduced many people to the thrill of landing their first big fish and always a true gentleman on the water. I have always looked forward to seeing Len doing his favorite things on Tillamook Bay and have seen him quietly pick up fish many times on "slow" days when many others were fishing empty water.

What a nice guy! Goodbye Len!

I am so sad to hear of Len's passing. I have known Len and Teri on a personal level for 6 1/2 years as I live next door to them on the Clacakamas River.

Len was a true gentleman, a great neighbor, and one of the Original Legends when it comes to local Fishing Guides. Len had one heck of a successful Sprigner season this year on the lower Willamette. He was always willing to tell me how the bite was, had been, and wasn't afraid to ask me the same. RIP neighbor.....

PS: go catch a Big one Len

Met Len before he started guiding as we were both staying at the rv park on the Wilson. We have been friends since . One of the few guides I know that was the same friendly person to all he met on the water. I will miss our early morning chats in front of Sturgon Pauls . Len, now you will always have "first water" RIP.

I will miss the occasional coffee time BS with him over at Genes store. He was always willing to share information out on the water and his kind knowledgeable demeanor was always pleasant. RIP indeed Len. We will miss you.

Fished along side him many days in the Tillamook system and always had a kind word to say and shared some advice with me that helped me get more fish. We will all miss you on the water Len RIP!!

Dear Friends,

Before I begin, Rhonda Shelby, our dear friend is doing a special tribute to Len at 6:20 AM on Fishtales on Channel 2 tomorrow morning.

In addition, Bill Monroe is honoring him in this Sunday Oregonian.

I am so devastated but I will try to get through this post.

Len was the piece of puzzle that I was missing and I was his. We fit together like 2 peas in a pod. I just don’t know what I am going to do without him. He was my sweet baby and the husband every women dreams of.

It feels like someone took our lives and cut them into little pieces - threw away half - put the rest in a sack and shook it all up. Then poured it on the floor leaving me to see what I can piece back together.

He was an awesome Father, Grand Father, Great Grand Father, Brother. Son, and Uncle -as well as Friend to many.

It started on September 15th. He was losing his balance. A CT showed 3 brain tumors. Within hours he was in the operating room having the biggest and most deadliest removed. On September 20 they removed the other 2.

Surprisingly, he never lost his mental capabilities, mobility or speech during these operations and was able to go home.

He had 4 full scan brain radiation treatments and then became very ill and was not able to make the rest of the appointments.

An MRI showed that the biggest tumor that they removed was returning and that there were lots more that had grown in a very short period of time. Most of them inoperable.

This is Melanoma which is the most rapidly spreading form of cancer there is.

I lost him at 5:25 PM on November 13th. Less than 2 months.

It was very peaceful. With brain tumors you go into a coma and then eventually the brain tells the heart to quit beating. He was surrounded by family.

It is still just so unbelievable. I just know he is at the Coast fishing and will be back tomorrow. If anyone sees him - please tell him to come home - I need him.

Sometime in the Spring I will have a Celebration of Life get together for him outdoors. I don't know where just yet, however if anyone wants to be included in the email that I will send out - email me and let me know. If anyone has suggestions on where I might hold this, that would be appreciated.

Also, if anyone has an awesome picture of Len, please email it to me. I will use it at the Celebration. proguide@teleport.com

He wanted his ashes spread up and down the Trask. He always said that he has eaten lots of Salmon from the Trask so he wants to give back and have the Salmon eat him!

Thank you to everyone for their prayers, kind words, best wishes and most of all the support.

I have had so many, many people offer to help me with anything I can think of. They keep asking me what I need and I tell them a bag full of money or a blank check! LOL

All kidding aside, everyone has been so wonderful and I want to apologize to anyone that called to see what was going on that I did not return phones calls to. It has been a hectic 2 months.

I am missing him so much and I know that lots of you are too. They say time heals all - I am waiting ---------------------

I can't say that I knew the man, other through his seminars at the Sports Shows. More than once though, fishing around Astoria, I'd wonder if I was in the right spot in that huge estuary. Then I'd see Len, and know that I WAS.
