I can't get right down to telling you about this without a little background.
Hit one of my favorite steelie rivers this morning at just before light. I put a small pink spin glo above a small bait of amerman cured eggs. Cast out and bump, bump, tug, tug, swing and a miss. Cast right back into the same slot and same thing, bump, bump, tug, tug, FISH ON!!! I can't see very well yet, it's still dark but I can see a kid directly across from me throwing spoons. I yell out that I have a fish on. The fish makes a slight run upriver and just as the fish rolls, I still can't see it, the kid tosses his spoon upriver above my fish. I kinda 'politely' tell him that I have a fish on right in front of him and he starts cranking his line in.
Can you guess what happens next?
His siwash hook gets down near the fish and acts just like one of those ocean hook remover gaff hook type rigs. Darn quick I'm reeling in my spin glo. I thank the kid and he has the gall to ask, Did you lose it?
Did have one more hit which I felt for about a five foot run before the hook came out.
Now I know why I try and fish only during the week. Now, all I got to do is wait for the holiday break to be over before the crowds will dissipate a little bit.
Before all you young guns start firing at me, let me say this, "I know it was a kid fishing across from me and it's nothing personal to kids fishing. It could've been anybody that would do that. Hopefully we can learn a little etiquette from this."
