Re: Springgers or late run?
Those were a rare breed called WINGERS or SPRINTERS that only happen in years ending in 3!

Re: Springgers or late run?
In the Sandy river Steelhead Journal, There is mention of a wild winter run of chinook in the sandy. From what the book said, it is a fairly small run of winter spawning chinook. Interesting to hear of some caught.
Do you know if they were wild or clipped?
(Guess I should have read closer, they were clipped, sounds like springers to me)

Re: Springgers or late run?
If they were clipped, there may have been coded wire tags in the snout. Recover one of those and odfw or wdfw could tell you where the fish came from.

Re: Springgers or late run?
Sounds like another wild-eyed rumor with no facts to back it up. By the way, we did have a seal cruisin our area upriver from St. Helens Sunday. He wouldn't be there if there wasn't feed.

Re: Springgers or late run?
They are probably winter chinook. They show up starting in mid november and run untill the end of Janruary. You can tell what they are when you open them up. The meat quality on all the winter fish ( lower columbia)I have caught has been very poor, even if the were crome with sealice. The meat has very little oil and usually is white and soft. You will also notice that after you kill the fish, it will darken up consideably. Please release these fish if possible. I sure would like to see These winter chinook runs build up. Think about it, catching Chinnok year around would be great.

Re: Springgers or late run?
The winter chinook are all wild and hence wouldn't have a clipped fin. They would have to be springers.

Re: Springgers or late run?
Well guys they have to be from some hatchery, but springers are is a bit strange.
If the gonads are very small and immature then yes springer, but if they are moer than say 10% of the body weight (called Gonad Smoatic Index or GSI for short) then they are soem late run chinook that maybe one of the tribes if putting out up river.

Re: Springgers or late run?
I have caught 3 "winter Chinook that have been clipped in the last 2 seasons out of 53 fish (Crome bright, white ,soft meat,no oil). I do not know how these fish got clipped since I also thought all winter chinook were clipped. I think I will talk to some hatchery people to see how late in the season they take Chinook in the fall for "egg production".
