Default Another good service story

As Justcastn mentioned in his thread on Saturday, I was not having a good morning that day. Put the boat in at Chinook and it would not start. I just had $900 worth of work done on this motor 3 weeks ago. Replaced the trigger box and the stater. Saturday it was acting like the same as before, would turn but no spark. (I need to mention that Beaver Marine in Gresham replaced the trigger box last year and told me the stater was weak. They did not tell me that not replacing the stater could cause the trigger box to go out again )

So I called the mechanic that did the work a few weeks ago yesterday morning, Dave Gonyea owner of Gonyea Marine and Automotive in Gresham, and he said to bring it by. I get to the shop 15 minutes before he closes. Rather than telling he will look at it in the morning, he immediately tears into it. BTW, I broke a belt on a tire on the way and they changed the tire for me too. Anyway, an hour later, 45 minutes after they are suppose to close shop, I pull away with a fully functioning motor, and without a bill. Not really sure what the cause of the no start, other than maybe there was no fuel getting to the carbs.

So to recap, he worked after hours, changed a bad tire, went completely through the ignition system, did a compression test, adjusted carbs and all FOR FREE!

So the moral of this story.....

If you need good, honest boat work at a reasonable price and in a timely manner go to

Gonyea's Marine and Automotive in Gresham.

Saftey Chain, I'm glad you had an excellent experience with Gonyea's service, and that he was so generous.
Last August I had trouble with my outboard motor cutting out. He was recommended to me, and when I called, worked my boat into his schedule before the following weekend. After discussing the problem with him, I rather expected the repair to run around $150, although he said he couldn't give me a firm estimate until he found the problem. No further communciation from him was recieved until after the work was completed, when he called to let me know I could pick up the boat. He then presented me with a bill of $426.21!!! He had installed a prime-pump addition to the fuel systm. Since I had not nailed him down to a firm estimate, I paid it.
However, I understand that state law requires any work over $75 beyond the estimate to be notified, prior to completion of the work.
NOTE: The work he did was good... and the motor has run well since. My complaint is that he did not notify me of the unexpected expenses in advance, so that they could be scrutinized before authorizing the work to be done. This,in my estimation, should have been done as a courtesy, if not by law.

Jet,
not a bad idea. At least that way if it starts acting up again, I have the mechanic with me
