Fishing curse still not broken/Wilson report
Imagine the anticipation the wilson is dropping into fine shape have the morning to fish, have a great setup, tied some special egg loops. I'm ready to catch some fish. Trial run was on tuesday all bugs are worked out. The steelies might as well just swim up to the bank and give themselves up.
About 20 problems, the first, a doe crossed in front of me on Brookwood in Hillsboro no big deal at least it wasn't an Elk, the fishing trip is still on. On my way down Hwy 6 I see eight elk I might as well turn around and go home. I think no I'm going to break this curse that has been placed on me. Three more miles down the road about 12+ elk cross the road in front of me. What is the curse you ask...well whenever I see elk on the way to go fish I never catch anything I have had everyone in the boat catch fish but me because I saw elk on the way. BTW I saw four elk on Tuesday that's my excuse and I'm sticking too it!
Anyways fished the Wilson and not even a courtesy bite. Riverkeeper it was nice meeting you. Next time I'll break out my flyrod and we can flog the water into a nice froth together.

The curse won't be complete until you see steelhead crossing in front of you during your next elk hunt...

Re: Fishing curse still not broken/Wilson report
You guys are probably right about being an elk magnet. I have filled my freezer with elk the last six years (rifle).
I have no idea what it is I ALWAYS seem to be where the elk are even when trying to fish. Heck I even called in a bull "learning" how to use one of my calls. If they don't quite stalking me I'm going to take you guys out with me for a slaughter. I am a pretty good on an elk call and I have a strong back. I would be willing to back someone up on an elk hunt in late august/early september. I do archery hunt also.
I need help getting into a fish on the coast! come on fish_on how many sturgeon have we caught together. I have caught salmon on the CR but only the natives it's an Alaskan thing you wouldn't understand

Re: Fishing curse still not broken/Wilson report
So it's true.
Fishalot and I are going down Hwy 6 extremely early Thurs AM and all off a sudden I say "There's an Elk". Fishalot says "Shhh don't say that, you'll get skunked!" He says I'm glad I did't see 'em. He explains to me about this rather silly curse, yeh, right......About 10 miles further he screams " Two Elk butts on the left!" ahhhh! You see 'em? ....yep.
Well, maybe next time we might get a fish on the Wilson.

Re: Fishing curse still not broken/Wilson report
Tilla,
It doesn't just apply to the Wilson river. It applies to all rivers.
If anyone with me see elk on the way to fish we don't catch anything.
I have seen elk on the way to St. Helens on cornelius pass to meet ZZZZZzzzz's his boat always catches fish. Kodiakfisher was the only one to get skunked. Saw elk on the way to fish with small fry guess what the whole boat was skunked he and his wife saw the elk also. I think it may be appropriate for me to go with a designated driver and I wear a blindfold.

Re: Fishing curse still not broken/Wilson report
The elk thing didn't apply on our best day earlier this week on the Bogachiel. Saw a herd of about 20 about a mile from the boat ramp and two of us still hooked 13 landing four.

Re: Fishing curse still not broken/Wilson report
I'll have to disagree. The curse isn't for EVERY river.
I was on my way to the Elochoman last year for some winter metal head action and on the way, saw a raghorn bull and a cow eating along the hillside. Guess what...wound up taking a steelie home that day!
I broke the curse and you can too  It's simple, all you have to do is believe in yourself! Oh yeah, and say 20 prayers to the fish gods for each deer that you see and 50 for each elk that you run across. Don't forget to repeat to yourself "I didn't see those elk...I didn't see those elk" (can also be modified for deer). Be sure and wear a blue feather in your hat and also there's the thing about...

Re: Fishing curse still not broken/Wilson report
Another attempt at some winter steel on the Wilson foiled again by at least 13 Elk . I thought today since it may be icy I will leave later at about 6:45 elk should be bedded by them hopefully anyways. Nope saw At least 13 probably more like 20 once they all stood up. Once I saw them I had to turn around and look for bulls only one little spike. Then again is it really all that bad to always see elk on the way to go fishing.
The Wilson was running really clear, it looked more like summer steelhead water. Saw one hooked by a fisherman in a driftboat other than that saw nothing else hooked. An old salmon was splashing around looking for some attention.
Is there anyone that thinks they can help break the curse You would have to be willing to risk getting skunked. This is my fourth trip and I have seen five bunches of elk. I at least need somebody else to drive while I sleep so I don't see them. I am now checking the regs to find out when the last archery season ends. I will be charging $150 to ride along with you archery hunters with my fishing gear. These elk always stop between 30 and 50 yds.

Re: Fishing curse still not broken/Wilson report
Kodiak.....I'll be more than happy to go with ya. I've never seen an elk on Highway 6, never seen a steelhead, either. Maybe if I can keep you from seeing elk, you can get me into a fish. I'm ready to either Wednesday or Friday. Send a PM

Re: Fishing curse still not broken/Wilson report
Hey KodiakFisher:
I'm willing to join you again! Maybe tomorrow? (Dec. 31) This is the last day of the year and what better way to end it by catching your limit of winter steelheads.
My availability is dependent on the weather. It's supposed to snow 2 inches over night.
Let me know.
Alan

Re: Fishing curse still not broken/Wilson report
KodiakFisher:
It was combat fishing at it's best down there. I only saw a few fish being caught. Didn't stay long.
I hooked 6 steelhead this month but was able to land only 1. I've been trying different methods. They've been biting on corkie, corkie/egg (your egg), bobber & jig, and even a Blue Fox spinner. I've never been to Nehalem River but it sounds like a fun place. I don't think the weather's gonna cooperate though. It's snowing now....
Good luck tomorrow!!
Alan
