NF Nehalem maps from Jim Erickson!
He sells the maps for $100 each or $75 each if you buy two. Plus, as an added bonus, he will take you for a float down the river to show you all of the holes for free. His map covers from the hatchery all the way down to Aldervale. It took us about 8 hours to float/fish the whole thing. There's lots of great steelhead water and his hand drawn map of the river shows all of the holes (steelhead and salmon, bank and boat) and they are marked and rated on a scale of 1 to 10. Plus, Jim has been fishing this river for almost 40 years and his knowledge of its history is excellent. The best way to get in touch with him is to call him at home at (503)368-5365. 8:00 p.m. seems to be the best time to catch him.
Jim is retired and the proceeds of the map sales go to the NF Nehalem chapter of the NW Steelheaders.
One thing to remember, the upper canyon goes through some wild water. There are several falls that you will go down, so waders and rain gear are a must and you supply your own fishing gear. It's a very unique experience that you won't forget. I just got back and If you want to fish a great river at the peak of steelhead season, now is the time. You can send a private message to me if you have any questions.

I did the same trip last December with Jim. What a pleasure fishing with such a great guy who does more than his fair share on the NF Nehalem. His vast knowledge is one of a kind. I agree, this is a trip you'll always remember.

The Bear,
When I fished with him last year I brought my own gear. I took my drift and bobber rod along, but I mostly drift fished. He will let you know where to cast and what holes hold fish. The less gear you bring along the better, especially if you are bringing a buddy. Have a great time.

Re: NF Nehalem maps from Jim Erickson!
Be prepared to be half holding on to the raft, and half enjoying the scenery, with your rod in your lap.
You'll hear, out of no where, "Quick! Throw it in that slot!"
DOH! HURRRRYYYYY!!!! Don't let your gear get fumbled!
He doesn't give you much warning or time, but I guarantee you that when he yells that command, it's a pretty much 'for sure' fish on if you are quick enough!

Re: NF Nehalem maps from Jim Erickson!
A trip on any river with Jim is pretty, umm, "unique." I get to go with him again Saturday and am taking a friend. I recall that in somewhat lower water driftboats get banged up pretty good. Willies are made of tough enough aluminum to stand up to it, but not all are. I don't take a driftboat down there in low water. Rafts are definitely the ticket.

Re: NF Nehalem maps from Jim Erickson!
Bear,
Sorry I didn't reply but I'm in Sitka, AK and I haven't been able to sign on for a few days, but Hooker was exactly right. A drift rod and a bobber rod should cover the best of the fishing. I think Jim sells jigs, if you need some.
D.
Can you believe it, here I sit in Sitka, Alaska and I can't go fishing. There's just no justice.
